I am looking into getting back into this game - What should I buy

Should I buy Final shape and wait until release, or do I need to buy the legacy collection? or????

What do you have so far? When in doubt, buy everything. I did for about $32. Lots of gear, story and activities in the past DLC's. I got the legacy collection for free in Epic but still got locked out of stuff so repurchased everything individually for much cheaper than the packs.

TFS definitely looks like it'll be great, but I'll prob wait a few months to finish up past content before I get it.

Play some of it now feel it out, if you like then buy new sht coming out and enjoy.
If not least you got taste of it and got to decide using your own consciousness.

Don't buy anything yet, they are going to make beyond light free so wait til tfs releases to see what to buy

I, uhh... think you have it backwards. If you keep GIVING them money for Destiny 2 then they will think there is no reason for Destiny 3 because 2 is just pumping out $$.

You actually want Destiny 2 to do poorly to give them a reason to make Destiny 3.

Old seasonal content (storylines and activities) go away when the new main expansion launches.

Buy the Final Shape and it's pass. That's it. That will be the relevant content. If you really like it, then go back and get other expansions later.

Oh my god, it would be incredible. Being able to go from the beginning of the Red War to where it's at now with all the seasonal stuff would be truly epic, and I mean that in the true sense of the word.

No, they are making the campaigns for Shadowkeep and Beyond Light free to play, they will have packs for them to get the rest of the expansions. Right now the prices are good.
Lightfall + Annual Pass (because dungeon key) is $19.99
Legacy Collection (2023) is $11.99 (you can bet the packs will be more)
Armory Collection (30th anniversary and Forsaken Pack) is $5.99
That's $37.98
If they do as they have in the past, the new Legacy Collection will be $60.00.

Don't buy anything for a few days. Some things (DLC) are supposed to be free, after that you can buy anything you don't have. But I mostly suggest you to buy story DLC for previous content, and Final Shape + Annual pass.
