Will Destiny 2 run on a Windows 10 install running on a virtual machine such as VirtualBox?
I switched to Linux in mid-2023 and my other games run fine. I know Destiny2 doesn't run on Proton, but will it run on a Windows 10 virtual machine if the virtual machine can interface with my graphics card (and assuming my hardware is fast enough)?

No reason it should not. A VM is just a computer using host hardware. As long as you configured it right.

Becareful they've banned people for this before

You're probably thinking a VPN, not a VM. They are totally different things.

Dual boot is the safe way.

massive performance penalty?

It most likely can, but be careful, as Destiny 2 is very anti-VM and anti-Linux. They have banned people in the past for this

You need to lookup piping through pci-e. You should most definitively buy another gpu, if you dont have one already, and dedicate this to the VM, meaning make sure it's not used by anything in your host operating system. Benefits to input lag, response time by having it dedicated, and there's also difference between amd/nvidia how effective the solution is.
Dual booting and dedicated operating systems is the easier route by far, because having a dedicated gpu just for gaming in a VM, will require at least setting up some rules to never allow that gpu in the host to not be used for anything, except for the vm.
You can take that a few steps further and dedicate other hardware too, meaning no software kvm input in use by vm host, ie dedicated mouse/keyboard, and obviously monitor, if not running 2 cables to same monitor - i'm not convinced that be ideal. Most moniitors give off HW information (DCI etc), even when inactive, to the host OS, that host os can interpret anytime.
Ideally the game would obviously just support linux, it's a shame that d2 doesn't.

Clarification on Virtual Machines

All VMs, regardless of implementation, are a bannable offense. Because VMs have the ability to transparently modify memory without the knowledge of the client OS, we cannot verify the chain of trust. This means that a malicious actor could surreptitiously do pretty much anything they want to the client's memory, behavior, etc.

As such, Destiny 2 does not allow VMs under any circumstances. If we detect your account playing from within a VM you will receive a full account ban.

Which is a fool's understanding of how much the host operating system can be changed as well to fit whatever the user's wish for it to be. And it doesn't even need that much changes. Doesn't mean your not wrong, just means it's no reason to ban for it simply being a vm. The actual reason is that it should be unreasonable to play from a vm, is that it's probably likely you don't have actual good intentions.

There's practically no reason not to dual boot, because that's way easier, and storage space is much cheaper now then before. In actual fact, if you have bad intensions, NOT using a vm, is optimal for a number of reasons. There's so much crap out there now, and none of it requires VM typicaly. And this is also why D2 behaves so badly towards certain software that is now so mainstream, literally, used by so many people...
In short we need better AC/security solutions.
