The raids have the best gear generally speaking. There are non-raid alternatives that are comparable or only a little worse, but if you want the BEST gear you might need to find a team. It's really easy to do so with their new in-game LFG they added but to answer your question, the true endgame content is largely centered on team play.

Hiya! No, you absolutely do *not* have to do raids. They can be very fun in Destiny 2, but are optional, as are nearly all other activities. In fact, you can play "solo" if you prefer. There is even currently a buff for the Season of the Wish (current patch/season) that grants you bonus damage to all enemies if you are the only member of your fireteam (what D2 calls "groups" or "squads").

In the "starter" quest line, there *is* something called a Strike, which is just a mini "dungeon" and can be thought of as a mission. Strikes are a major part of most players' lives, but are not necessary if you don't want. I recommend trying them though. They are easy, quick and reward great gear. You use matchmaking which auto pairs 3 players on a team against the bad guys and go kick butt.

But if you're a mainly solo player or prefer that it's totally possible. You can "Explore" different zones, and there are what's called "Public Events", "Patrols" and other activities, too. So to answer your question, personally I think playing with others in things like Strikes, PvP (called the Crucible in D2) or Gambit (a mixture of PvE and PvP—think WvW on GW2 if you've played that) is fun, and most players do enjoy grouping a lot, but it isn't required. You can play, and play effectively, all the way to endgame all by yourself if that's your thing. Good luck and Merry Christmas/happy holidays! (Happy Dawning, if you decide to play D2—that's the winter celebration or D2 version of Xmas xP).

P.S. The D2 fanbase is actually pretty big. Either that or Bungie (the developers) did a great job at server and player integration. There is almost never any place that is "dead" as some zones in some MMO's can be, and always people to play with, if you decide to do that. That doesn't mean you have to raid, though. Some people never raid. There is something for everyone in D2.

you don't have to, but i wouldn't miss them either. they may be challenging, yet can be very fun
3k hours speaking and still couldn't beat a raid activity so is very playable without doing them although you wish for once have particpated for the first time to know how does it feel.

My first time, I've thought microphone was enabled and people were getting mad because local chat was not implemented yet back in Season of Undying and for that reason. They simple kick me out. I'm not offended for being totally lost in Leviathan: Eater of Worlds. But Bungie should have warned team voice wouldn't work without a third party program like Discord never used because I've heard complaint in the forum about being bannable. Using Steam voice chat do work but the quality ain't good.

You don't need to do raids. Good gear has lots of different sources in the game, but raids often do have very good gear. Raids are not the only endgame activity. They are a part of the endgame.

During the week that the specific raids is the pinnacle one, you can simply join a group and farm the easiest raid boss. That is how I got all the crafting patterns for the Last Wish raid weapons by farming Kalli.

For instance right now, Vault of Glass in the pinnacle raid, so you can join a group that is doing Templar, one of the easier fights in the raid, to get Fatebringer, a very good 140 RPM hand cannon.

Raiding in this game is somewhat different from the usual MMOs. While yes, you need some degree of team coordination, you're not doing the usual trinity of healers, DPS, and tanks in Destiny. Everyone is DPS and must contribute to the fight. It's not the same as raiding in say Final Fantasy 14 or other games.

You absolutely can get great gear from just playing the game normally. Raiding is an optional activity, but you do miss out on a lot of what makes Destiny different from other games if you don't raid.

Good point. Team coordination in this game is more about positioning and calling out stuff during puzzles
