Judging off that I’d say don’t bother, or ya know try for free and find out yourself whichever one you prefer.
Like you I haven't played since launch and the last 50 hours i've put into the game has been very recent. I had no idea what i was doing at launch and found massive maps with barely anything going on and confusing navigation and questing.
I've only recently started playing again after purchasing legacy collection/ lightfall / forsaken etc and while the questing and navigation is still confusing x10 i am finding the seemingly endless amount of things to do and the gunplay rather like gaming crack. It seems far more refined than pretty much every fps game i've ever played and each campaign enjoyable, so long as you stay on track, which is sometimes easier said than done given the initially utterly confusing amount of individual campaign-centric unlocks and requirements needed to push forward through them.
It's ridiculous after spending around 90 bucks on top of my already missing original battle.net game account that looking around the various planet maps that there is stuff locked off because of season passes etc, but i can't deny this is a supremely addictive piece of software.
Storywise you will be lost without Youtube catchup Videos.
Content wise, F2P is basicly just a Demo. for the rest you better open up your Wallet.
The "Light Powers " Solar, Arc & Void have been reworked same as the Armor system & are imo a great change
The Two new " Darkness Powers " Stasis(Ice Powers obtained by owning Beyond Light) & Strand(Thread or Manipulation of fate power, obtained by owning Lightfall) are pretty badass editions , but require owning two diffrent DLCs.
Having to buy also Vaulted(removed content) to get old Exotic Weapons & Gear is a just greedy practice, but hey thats Bungie Managment atm.
Raids,Dungeons (3 man raids) & "current" Season Content requires major investment (200 bucks if you wanna play everything)
Then you still have Strikes( mini dungeons at best) & Nightfall version( harder version of strikes) that net you some decent Gear.
PvP has been on a Downhill for the Last 2 Years & the Current Meta is just painfulll to play, if your not a Titan. Iron Banner has been boring for a long time & without good loot imo.
Trails of Osiris is still the premier PvP Gamemode, but as i said the Meta sux.
Gambit ( a mix of PvE&PvP) is Dead for even longer, then there is Dares which is basicly a Hoard shooter with diffrent enemy Types per Round (also get boring Real Fast).
Overall it IS a better game from where it Launched from, but Major Time & Money investment is needed to be able to fully Enjoy the game
Plus 70% of the cool outfits,Finisher,Sparrows & Ships are all Paid ( some even give slight advantages, looking at you skin for DMT)
So in Short you either stay away from this hell hole of greed & brainrot grind
or
You pay Up & can enjoy some great Gameplay with memorable Moments sprinked in between.
this is some pretty insane cope lmao
Is saying "the game has improved since Y1" cope? Seems pretty universally true.
However, you will not have access to the two Darkness subclasses (Stasis from Beyond Light and Strand from Lightfall) or any of the campaign storylines.
You will be unable to play any of the dungeons (3-man content) outside of Prophecy and any raids (6-man content) tied to any of the expansions. If a Nightfall strike is tied to an expansion, you will not be able to launch that activity.
Moreover since the Witch Queen, Bungie has decided to sell dungeon access keys separately from the expansions, so you will need the Witch Queen Dungeon Key from the in-game store to get access to Spire of the Watcher and Duality; and the Lightfall Dungeon access key to get access to Ghosts of the Deep and whatever the next dungeon that is coming next season will be.
Storywise, you will only have access to the very short New Light story that barely explains anything. You'll have missed out on a ton of seasonal stories at this point, so the best way to get caught up is probably watch a Destiny lore youtuber.
IMO, the F2P content is decent taste of what the game has to offer gameplay-wise, but it gives a very poor introduction to what the story and world of Destiny actually is about. It really should be noted as more of an unlimited free trial of the game than F2P.
If you could care less about the story and you have friends who'd love to play it then I'd say sure if you're willing to pay for all the expansions. The gunplay is still very impactful and fun as it ever was, PvP is still fun as long as you stay away from those people who love meta stuff and just play it casually just using stuff you like, its got PvP modes other than deathmatch too.
If you do care about the story or don't know if you'd like it into what its become, its sad to say that you just shouldn't play it. Watching a youtuber play it or explain the story works sure but this is a video game its better when you play through it and the whole experience is lessened a ton if you just watch someone else.
That's not entirely accurate or fair. The Forsaken campaign and the Tangled shore are gone, sure, but much of Forsaken is still in the game. This is why there is the Forsaken pack. Dreaming city, Last Wish, Shattered throne, blind well, ascendant challenge, patrols and public events etc in the Dreaming City are all still there. Much of what made Forsaken great is still in the game.
