FPS drops on a beast PC
Hello. Last week I had issues with Destiny 2 lagging on me. I figured out it was when I up the game to 144hz on my 144hz monitor, it causes lag loops every 30 seconds and when I went down to 60 FPS, the game runs fine. I went from a 2080 TI to 4080 now and never had issues like this on my 2080 TI. Am I missing something and can anyone give me advice to help me put the game at 144hz? I have a 4K monitor and does 144hz, so I assumed Destiny 2 would be a cake walk as it was on my last card and processor. My processor is i9 11900KF and my last one was an i7, so I'm at a loss. My PC is brand new and thanks in advance.

Did you turn off both Vsync and framerate cap?

Ahh okay, mine are turned both off as i don't need them on my pc either.. Since i've also bought a new pc couple of weeks ago, 4070 TI /I7-13700k. Vsync only shows up to 60 fps on my end while i have 2 144 hz screens..

You can always close down the game and verify files to see if that does anything, if it's a more technical problem than i can't really help you out since deep technical stuff is where my knowledge lacks..

Did a quick google search and this is something that i did find: https://www.reddit.com/r/destiny2/comments/7bnu0o/pc_vsync_locked_at_60fps_not_144/

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/game-ready-drivers/13/282177/144hz-most-games-capped-at-60-fps-in-fullscreen/

Maybe that it could help you.

Unfortunately, it does not. When it's 144hz, it's lags every 30 seconds and I've tried every solution possible, but playing at 60hz fixes the issue, but I'd prefer to play at 144hz. Any idea of what it could be?

Unfortunately, nope.. As i can't think of anything else, the only thing i could think off is either a software option holding you back or maybe.. Maybe a hardware option, which i find highly unlikely due to your pc being brand new..

The second link did actually show me that i forgot to do something myself as both of my monitors were set to 60 fps in the control panel.. I've put them up to 120 on the ultra HD function (Since there is one and a normal one up to 144hz).. The game looks really crisp now (Even better than before), kinda reminds me of playing wolfenstein the new order back in the day at a game convention before ithe game released.. Was a xbox stand from bethesda back then, the responsiveness i had playing wolfenstein is now the same as with destiny and probably other games.. So pretty much a nostalgia throwback to me :P

Have you checked your power settings from Windows itself and from NV control panel?

From advanced power settings, "minimum processor state" should be 100% (it will still throttle down when needed) and maximum should be 100% too.
Also could make sense to check PCI Express Link State Power Management and turn it off to see if it makes any difference.
NV control panel should have "prefer maximum performance" enabled.

You also need to make sure the CPU doesn't thermal throttle etc. Intel can get really hot and in such cases undervolting is a good solution.

Other than this it's hard to say without knowing some specifics about your system. D2 doesn't allow rivatuner overlay which makes hard to analyze what is actually going on.
I don't know about the specifics, but it also could be that D2 just won't run that well over 60 fps regardless of the hardware (I have never tried to run it higher than that).

Im at the same rocketlake 11700kf and 3080ti and no such issue, a friend with 11900k and 4080 also doesnt have any issue like that.

Did you reinstall the driver? Set clean install?

by windows power plan - high perf. is enoug imo.

In nvcpl D2 profile set
-low latency mode - enabled at ultra
-power - prefer max performance
-threaded optimization - on

for extra visual quality
force 16xAF in profile in game set to off.

Also
use 141fps limit and vsync
set windowed fullscreen instead of fullscreen.

low latency mode offers no benefit for desktop pc where performance setting are set manually in bios. It's questionable ok on vsync/gsync/adaptive freesync but usually just disabling any sync option is the smoothest option. Especially if continually updating drivers for gpu.
The biggest performance gain in destiny 2 is disabling mouse smoothing for desktop and turning LL off - in terms of input and responsive play. This needs to be done even tho it says so ingame, in d2 options, that it's disabled, once set manually in config file its ok.
Low Latency mode is featured both in gpu driver and ingame.

I've done every method possible to try and fix it, but the second I put the game at 144hz, it runs very smoothly, then 10 minutes in, it lags every 30 seconds to a minute. When I put it to 60hz, it's fine. What am I doing wrong? I did 4K and 144hz on my last PC during Beyond Light. There's definitely something missing, lol, but I appreciate everyones help, BTW.

What happens to gpu temperature in that 10min mark?

Nothing. It runs fine, then 10 minutes later it starts lagging. Even in the Tower when there is very little players. :(

Also, I ran a quick Vault of Glass at 60hz and ran fine, but when I do a strike at 144hz, it lags. There must be something I'm overlooking, haha.

Maybe it's some recording sw, Geforce Experience - shadowplay or windows game recording mode? I know one of them has 10min buffer or something.

I've turned off every overlay. I've done everything possible, updated BIOS, fresh install, updated drivers, turned down settings, turned off background apps, checked ant-virus, EVERYTHING, but the lag continues. It's hardly the monitor or am really missing something here. It's driving me insane.

gpu stays in max boost mode when that happens?

Maybe try techpowerup counter control 1.2 and see if you're affected by defender timer clock. I was until I switched AV, but then I didnt have such fps drops. Only one particular with steam screenshot mode, it would cap my fps around 90ish fps then.. Restarting the game fixed it.
