I'll put it like this:
Think of Destiny 2 Free to Play as the Demo. I know this is obvious but people overlook this..
If you want the full experience, buy the DLC. I said this once before and it's true.
I believe Beyond Light is rather dirt cheap right now on Steam Marketplace and you can probably get lucky and find a Lightfall key for Steam cheap somewhere else.
Maybe that will answer your question?
Honestly? not really.
If we think about Destiny 2 came out as an normal game and people had to pay the game + the dlc's came out later on that granted only new exotics and not the subclasses then no, I wouldn't call FtP as a Demo.
Especially when they make you pay for almost the full price of the game every time an expansion that gives paid players an advantage is honestly not acceptable. Expansion should be paid? Sure. After all it just adds to the story. But rest like new abilities being locked onto an paywall that almost costs as same as an game (at least in my country) and clearly gives an advantage on PvP's really can't be justified by calling the game FtP. After all that just makes this game Pay to Win as the others.
(btw, already bought the Beyond Light DLC since yes, it was hella cheap now.)
The subclasses are part of both stories, which is part of an expansion. I ain't trying to cherrypick but it's the truth.
To an extent, I could say I agree. I am honestly not surprised because Destiny 2 is now a live-service game. I don't think it's surprising at this point anyway and I rarely see people chat about subclasses locked behind a paywall. I can't really say much here.
Forsaken was in the same spot with its supers I think (eventually these supers were made available to everyone).
Maybe the same will happen down the road? I dunno. We'll see.
everything you can get is from grinding the game, the new subclass's are a hit or miss, imo the only good one is the new strand subclass(its actually quite fun to use) statis subclass kinda sucks, it all depends on play style.
again nothing in the game is really pay to win, as its mostly a pve game first unbalanced pvp second, like i said the galahorne is the only paid to win item if you dont want to grind for it.
In Guild Wars 2, you need to buy expansions to unlock Virtuoso, Harbinger and so on. In Final Fantasy 14, you need Endwalker to play Sage and Reaper.
The main exception is probably Warframe, where you can grind for new frames. It takes a while to farm for them though.
Also, you don't even unlock the new subclass until you beat the campaign. Which again, is a part of the expansion. It is a part of the story and the campaign.
Additional subclasses have always required a DLC purchase even before the 3.0 reworks. When Destiny 2 first launched and used the diamond subclass section there were two trees available (top and bottom tree), unlocking the middle tree required you to own Forsaken. Even going back to the first game the post-launch additional subclasses also required DLC.
