Tips and tricks for a returning player?
I haven't played Destiny 2 since maybe 2021, am I fine just buying Lightfall or do I need older content to make the game work?

well, majority of the content out rn requires some form of dlc, you might wanna start at getting forsaken, then shadowkeep, then beyond light, then witch queen, then lightfall, better to catch up on the prereqs rather do the newest

to put this into perspective, majority of the content out rn requires shadowkeep forsaken beyond light and witch queen, at least a good portion of it, then lightfall just adds more ♥♥♥♥ to the table, granted you'll be able to do some but not everything due to dlc requirements

You should def do the campaign storylines, they give good rewards once completed and if you're into understanding the story :)
It's also good for getting to the soft cap for gear level.

If the old DLC is on sale, buy it. Especially if it's more than 50% off, IMO. If it's not, wait for the sale. (I see some of them are 60% off right now, too!) Other than that, I'd stick to the most current thing if you're desperate to get into the game.

so to streamline this best i can, should i look for the legacy pack on sale? is the 30th anniversary pack something i should get? i know it says there's a dungeon in there but idk if it's relevant to pinnacle farming and such.

Skip the 30th anniversary. It's just extraneous "stuff" really.
