I know that playlist strikes, Crucible, and Gambit are for sure F2P accessible, as is the Prophecy dungeon. The intro mission of each major expansion can also be done F2P, but subsequent missions will require buying the corresponding expansion.

Edit: Nightfall is also F2P accessible unless it's from a currently-available expansion (Lightblade Nightfall requires Witch Queen xpac, for example, but can still be randomly gotten as a playlist strike too without needing to own Witch Queen)

You shouldn't buy anything either way because they will remove content you paid for sooner or later.

That number is MASSIVELY inflated, it includes both the DLC bundles and individual DLCs, as well as pre-orders and cosmetics. If you optimize, last steam sale you could get all DLC for under $100, still expensive but a lot less than $400. Only buy what you want, there is no pressure to buy EVERYTHING. And if you want 0 dlc, don't buy any.

More F2P stuff:
3 raids (VoG, KF, CE)
Handful of exotics (kiosk ones as well as quests)
All destinations (vendors are limited though)
You can reach max gear level for free
Season pass has free rewards, you can get the exotic if you reach level 35

It's not worth the price of zero dollars? I'm confused as to why anyone wouldn't just play it. IT'S FREE, IT COSTS YOU NOTHING, AND YOU RECEIVE ENTERTAINMENT. You can delete it the moment you wish to.

for a time you can enjoy aspects of the game as a beginner but once you get to a point where you are dying to something in crucible that is locked behind a paywall you'll want to pay. its more free to "try" than free to pay. everything that is free is small aspects of the game that are expanded on when you play the dlc's like dungeons raids and loot that is locked.

I've had DLCs bought for me in the past, but I mainly just play the game for gambit and crucible, dropping out and coming back every so often. The free content's okay if you're not into giving game companies $40+ to give you a bunch of story-related content or pay-gated season events.
