Crucible is still the same old Crucible. There's a pretty good variety of gun types that are relatively usable in the current sandbox, but the recent buffs to Gravaton Lance and the ineffective nerf to aggressive SMGs have made those guns overly effective. Same goes with No Time to Explain but it's been like that for years now. Ability wise the game is as fun as it ever was with nothing in particular being TOO crazy nowadays but all still being very frustrating to be on the receiving end of.
Mode wise trials is the most accessible and relaxed as it's ever been with round going must faster thanks to the switch to dominion, removal of card based matchmaking, the introduction of 2 mercies, and the ability to get adept guns without even needing to go flawless (just need to win at 7). It seems to be a pretty good state with the exception of the cheese that can result from the dominion game mode (but that is very map dependent).
Comp is better than it was prior to the rework, but while the comp gun in both cases have been really good, only having 1 chance per character per week really takes the wind out of any person's motivation to play. Combine that with very limited ways to show off your rank outside of ascendant ranked players (the transmat shows copper rank to everyone else), and there's little motivation to play outside of maybe getting the glorious seal.
Iron Banner and Control are hurt pretty badly by the heavy lobby balancing and SBMM. There's not really any consensus on this as those changes help less experienced players find better matches but dedicated pvp players are left with poor connections and matches that feel like they're placed in a tourney. Luckily the addition on the relentless playlist and its connection-based match making has helped with this and given everyone a space where they can be comfortable.
Rumble being a constantly available playlist is good.
Both are utterly loathsome
I even play Trials of Osiris whatever I win or not, (and I won sometimes) I enjoy Crucible a lot, same for Gambit, really have tons of fun with friends, if you lose, you learn, unless you find cheaters, wich anyway there all over in every single game.
BUT, Bungie servers are really really really ruining many times the experience, and Gambit deserves more love, has only 3 maps since forever... really...
Crucible fares a little better, but it has more modes and maps to give it some variety. But, again, if you've played for a while, its all pretty meh at this point for a lot of us.
got em
As for Crucible, I'm not sure. It just feels like for whatever reason, Bungie lets it hold their creativity back with builds and weapons. This isn't the fault of the PvP for existing mind you. I think it's simply an unwillingness to let us go ham playing with our toys in PvE while restricting PvP loadouts. Hence the restrictions are largely shared. A big change I would like to see with the game would be for exotic armor pieces to have gear cost scores akin to Mod costs. That way a bunch of outright ignored bad exotics can be given low cost scores to be paired with better exotics. But enough about that, the Crucible itself. I'm genuinely not sure what could be done to make it more attractive to a casual player like myself. I have particularly bad aim when targeting enemy guardians, but I'm not graced with opponents that share in that weakness. And as much as I prefer skill based matchmaking, even when it does have it; I'm still constantly matched with people I can't compete with on a mechanical level. And it just makes me want to return to PvE or Gambit. Also screw Trials. If you like it, good. But a PvP mode that tells you to do flawlessly or gtfo? No thanks. And it's very not cash money to lock cool looking transmogs and weapons behind this system. I'll take Iron Banner over Trials any day.
