It depends on what you want out of a game.
Destiny 2 is an ARPG, looter-shooter style of game. It has good gunplay, pretty good physics. It has about 15 weapon archetypes. It offers a variety of modes, from solo play, to (semi) open world patrol zones, public events, to co-op, 3 person activities, 6 person activities. PvP with varying sizes of teams and objectives. There are high end activities for both PvP and PvE as well.
It does also have a story, but the moment-to-moment combat is a more important element.
It's also a Game-as-a-Service that runs in (roughly) 3 month installments. Each "season" includes its own story and activities and rewards to chase. Because of the nature of seasonal play, each new season is (somewhat) a reset.
If that sounds like fun to you, then give the FTP version a try.
As has been mentioned, if you enjoy the game, you are going to want to spend money on it at some point. The FTP version is an unlimited demo, most of the actual story content is behind paywalls.
But if you're looking for a traditional MMORPG or a traditional C-RPG, then neither of those are what Destiny 2 is, if you go into the game expecting that sort of experience, you're likely to be disappointed.
If you enjoyed the type of gunplay present in the Borderlands games, then this is very similar. If you've played other ARPGs (Diablo, Diablo 2, Torchlight, TL2, Grim Dawn, Path of Exile, etc) and enjoyed those, then this is a similar sort of game-play loop.
If those aren't games you've enjoyed, then Destiny 2 isn't likely to appeal.
Also you missed out on lots of weapons you can no longer get (crafted and non crafted too).
This game is FOMO at it's purest form.
If you buy the seasons passes you still have to do tedious grind to unlock what you paid for, you basically pay to grind here and are basically locked to play Destiny almost non stop to get what you paid for.
So it's certainly not a game I would recommend to people with little to no time to play.
Nah, Red War through Warmind can be summarized in a paragraph. Shadowkeep forward is the real D2 story.
You can also hit season pass 100 and get the title in the last week if you need to.
otherwise a story recap all the way up until current season if. The videos are SO LONG (4.5 hours)
If you dont care about story then dont worry about that, just try it.
Be aware though you will be locked out of alot and its all very disjointed and game does bad job of explaining wtf anything is. So get ready to be googling alot!
Also if you are Solo you will also not really be able to get the best out of the game without using LFG on Bungie.net
If you are fine with all the above and are ok to get wallet out then go for it. If you think its worth it as a f2p player Id say its not really.
If you Are going to spend money then RESEARCH and use code sites as you will save alot.
I did all the above and 200 hours later and £90 I have everything and am enjoying it altho some old DLC stuff is garbage. Its funny see Lightfall so negative on Steam cos its so so much better than Beyond Light for example which was simply terrible
Oh and if you dnt like jumping thru hoops and random grind (sometimes unnecessary grind too) then really dnt bother
GLHF
There are people on here who are willing to answer questions about game play if you feel you need help there.
All it cost is a bit of your time to decide if you like it or not, none of us can tell you what you will or will not like.
Unless you want to jump into a game and have no idea why you are fighting the enemy... thanks to the devs removing the ability to the play the storyline / content from the first parts of the game.
