How good is whisper of the worm?

I dont care about meta, but I do like using guns that get the job done lol. Is it any good? I haven't used it for about 3 years

Numbers are good, but it's too unforgiving. It works well when the catalyst is on, you don't miss crits to proc the perk and DPS window is around 20+ sec. If these conditions are not fulfilled, the perfomance drops.

Even if you do everything perfectly, there're still better and more forgiving options.

It's still a weapon capable of good dps, the problem is that you only need to miss 1 crit and it basically goes to 0, also considering the fact that there are a number of alternatives that are both much easier to use while doing more damage and also have better ammo economy.
That preatty much summarize why no one uses whisper anymore.

One of the best total damage weapons, with capable dps in optimum circumstances. As before, the optimum circumstances are way too tight for general use, and missing a single crit causes your dps to fall off a cliff. Given it's dps isn't even the best on a good day and it's total damage isn't that far ahead of its much easier competitors that don't even require critical hits at all, it's an all round bad gun with a couple of scarce situational uses

The weapon in of itself is mostly fine, but the game has a lot less focus on enemies that Whisper works best on. We have a lot more bosses these days that are mobile, have smaller crit boxes, just flinch like crazy, or some combination of the three.

All around ? Probably still G-horn. Homing rockets, + 2 in the mag + Clusterbombs is incredibly potent for a rocketlauncher. Specially when you count in the fact that it gives everyone around you using a rocketlauncher around it clusterbomb rockets.

Сatalysts are implied by default. Thunderlord is mentioned above. Leviathan's Breath and good Adaptive/Aggressive RLs+Wolfpack buff do around the same total dmg as Whisper in much less time.

B&S Cataclysmic is a better Whisper with higher total DMG and almost the same DPS. Two-Tailed Fox if you're the only person applying Jolt. Grand Overture is good, but it can be annoying to manage for some. Firing Line LFRs are still decent.

Swap combos like RL/GL/B&S Cata and Cloudstrike/Izanagi/Lucky Pants are great, but you need to get used to rotations.

Merciless, Sleeper and Xeno are good options in general, but they lack reserves and need a backup weapon.

Gjallarhorn is a support/AOE weapon after all those nerfs. It's on par with good High-Impact RLs, maybe a bit better in 10sec window due to mag size, but total dmg is lower and you run out of ammo fast.

amazing with catalyst vs big, stationary critspots. flinch is a ♥♥♥♥♥, though you can use armor mods if needed.
think it just got an ammo buff too
