Generate Calibration Data Catalyst

Do I need to have the weapon for which I want to generate calibration data i.e. activate the catalyst, equipped or is it enough if I just bring the weapon along and shoot with another gun the whole time, to generate calibration data?

I have a few catalysts stuck at generate calibration data so the plan is to bring em all along and grind out at once.

The 'Calibration Data Generated' part of those catalysts quests get progressed just by completing activities, you don't actually have to have the weapon equipped or even in your inventory at the time. So for the most part, it will be Vanguard Ops, Crucible or Gambit, with at least one other (Verglas Curve) also counting seasonal activities (Defiant Battlegrounds).

That means you can progress all of them simultaneously without needing to bring any of them along with you.

There will also be a weapon kill requirement, for which you do need to make kills using the weapon.
