To do it you would need to create an account on xbox, psn, or egs, login with your new account on bungie net and then with crossave connect your steam account. After it all you had on steam will be rewritten with progress on other account, and if you will unlink your steam, all your progress would be return

You can just log into Bungie and do it yourself? If you want to play the game from the beginning it is impossible because Bungie has removed a lot of the planets, blaming "Spaghetti coding" What you can do is log in with a different platform that offers the game for free and make an new account there.

Dismantle everything in the vault and postmaster, then delete all characters. You would still have your achievements and challenges, if that's not enough, make a new account.

There is no way to reset any progress on any account. Bungie does not offer services to do so.

despite what the moderator said you can reset your account in a way. if you have 3 characters delete 2 characters, create a new character. and then delete the remaining character. I would recommend deleting and dismantling everything on your account first for materials + you would keep your emotes & materials. that being said, i don't believe your collections would be reset. if you truly didn't invest any money you wouldn't lose anything by creating another steam account and playing destiny 2 there as the others on this post have stated.

maybe it would be better if he just downloaded the GOG version? my understanding is that its a completely separate game so it would be a fresh account and then if he ever decided to spend money on the game he'd be able to pick between the two platforms the better deal and could stick with that one from then on

No such animal. GoG does NOT have Destiny 2.
