I can't really go much more in depth on the story, Bungie has never been great at making the actual story missions explain anything, especially since moving to the seasonal model, so I gave up caring about it. There are youtubers like My Name is Byf or Myelin Games who have videos explaining the story, so if story is a major draw for you they're probably your best source for catching up.
Honestly, you'd be better off with a refund and a better game.
The story moves on even without your participation, and devs removed old seasons and campaigns, so the only way to get answers is to look outside of the game, e.g. Byf and Myelin as mentioned above or

The Veil story is partially revealed through Lightfall campaign, Vexcalibur exotic quest, Veil Containment audio records and Season of the Deep story.
Calus, as stated above, is a Cabal Leader who at this time serves the Witness. Prior to this, he held the position of being emperor of the cabal; being one of, if not the, most prevalent antagonist you faced. That was prior to sunsetting. Now, he just acts on behalf of the Witness. Btw, that "Caitul" (forgive the spelling) is his daughter. And if they refer to somebody named "Ghaul" thats can old D2 villian who died.
At this point, i'm kind of just as confused as you are.
Live service games tend to keep moving with content whether or not you play them.
Why do I have to go outside of the game to know the story?
You don't, the game has a timeline listing the order in which story events happened. It's just less complicated if you watch videos lining it up.
Why in the world would Bungie stop caring about their most popular and profitable game?
Lad if you think how they're acting with updates and DLC dating back, in fact you can pick how long, is care you're being silly.
Its relatively clear its made up on the spot. you could argue maybe this community is a lil needy and I'd totally agree, upsetting this community is so easy.
But to mess up so many basic routine things and clearly mug off the player base with certain dlcs and such is a joke ting to say they care.
Unless you're chatting about them caring about the profit (which ig makes sense its a business)
