Anything that says it can drop from a 'strike' can drop from the Vanguard Ops playlist, and also from playing Nightfalls.
idk how much i fancy doing the EXACT same mission over and over all week just for something to not drop- id rather do normal vanguard ops but idk if these cats drop from there.
there might some catalysts that still require doing NFs, but i'm not aware of any that are like that anymore. lots of them have been changed. as an example, the Mida Multi Tool catalyst can drop from doing any crucible match now; you don't have to play in comp and get up to the higher ranks for the chance of it dropping anymore.
some catalysts seem to favor certain activities but could just be how it played out for me. the Malfeasance catalyst, for instance, can drop from any playlist activity, but when it finally dropped for me, it was after a couple of Gambit matches even though I had done numerous strikes and crucible matches before playing any Gambit at all... Malfeasance being a Gambit weapon, it would make sense if the odds were higher for the catalyst to drop in that activity, but could have just been how my RNG worked out and the odds really weren't any better in Gambit.
if the drop rate really is affected by difficulty, that'd explain why year 1 catalysts are so damn rare
