Catalyst drop rates weird?

Before Lightfall, I had a bunch of exotics and NO catalysts for any of them. With a new weapon I plan to main, I was trying to get a specific Catalyst to drop from Strike, but I'm getting Catalysts for equipment currently stored in my vault (that I don't plan on using soon! bit of a collector)

I just want the ONE catalyst, but I'm also confused as to why in the world all these catalysts are dropping NOW, when I was grinding strike for about a month before straight and didn't get a single one.

Anyone know if they changed how catalyst drops worked?

i have the same/different issue, i never get catalysts at all, even for weapons i use for multiple activities in a row, when usually after day or so i would get the catalyst for a new exotic quickly. it also seems kinda bugged with monument exotics, ive been trying to get the ace of spades and the last word catalyst since a week ago, and only managed to get the trinity ghoul catalyst despite me not even having it equipped

but maybe its just RNG

Pretty sure whether you are using it or not has never had anything to do with whether it drops, it's just RNG.

I am also farming for the catalyst for Graviton Lance. I have been farming strikes/crucible for 2 years and no drop at all. Still no drop.

I haven't gotten a catalyst for any gun in a while now, so who knows lol.

year 1 catalysts have a miniscule drop rate
you probably wont get them even doing 3k strikes in a row

Gonna be honest, I've been playing the game since Launch and I just got the Mida Catalyst like a few months to maybe a year ago after all these years.

Got mine today, thought STILL waiting for Vigilance Wing and that was the first exotic weapon I got way back in 2019 lol

Mida catalyst for a very long time was tied exclusively to playing comp games while at max rank. They since have made getting max rank much harder and therefore changed the Mida catalyst to make it drop from any PvP.

Does anyone know if I should be playing Vanguard Ops, or Nightfall strikes? Like, does the difficulty affect the drop chance? Or should i just farm Vanguard Ops because easy?

I am sorry, you cannot target farm very rare Catalyst. I am looking for the Graviton Lance catalyst it was my first exotic that dropped and after 3 year I still dont have the catalyst. On the other hand I have almost all the other super rare ones I will never use, and most people would "kill for it". My best advice is to just play the game, and dont stress on it, since you either get lucky with 0.001% drop rate or not, But for me Vanguard Ops dropped way more than any other activity, if the current Nightfall is easy just farm it on heroic, but if it is slow, just go for regular strikes.

Catalysts cannot be target farmed beyond playing a certain activity. On top of that, they're completely RNG. That said, older catalysts are generally a much rarer chance than those that were introduced much later.

The Last Word hand cannon, as of today, still doesn't have catalyst. Bungie might add it sometime in the future (like the recently added Malfeasance catalyst).

TIPS: If you want better catalyst drop, make sure you finish the objectives of all the catalyst you already have. Use Shuro Chi checkpoint on the Last Wish Raid (if you have Forsaken DLC) or Altar of Sorrow to farm kills.

I started playing D2 in August 2022 and as of today, I got all the exotic catalyst except for The Colony grenade launcher. But I think the Colony low drop for me is because I rarely play Crucible (Vigilance Wing and The Colony catalyst only drop from Crucible victories, losing matches doesn't count).
