How much have I missed out on?
So I got tired of the FOMO model even before Beyond Light but did play that one.

So if I were to get Witch Queen and then Lightfall, what are the things I´d have missed from seasons?

Of course I could get the exotics and I don't care about cosmetics, just wondering about key loot.

Also it's relevant because pretty much all my favorite gear got sunset so I'd have nothing now.

Well... each season had a story.
S16 was about the alliance with Empress Caiatl, the ruler of the surviving Cabal.
S17 was about the mistakes that haunt Crow, Zavala and Empress Caiatl.
S18 was an interlude that was a departure into ancient (evil) Darkness Relics and how they impacted the Eliksni.
S19 was about Ana and Elsie Bray attempting to rebuild Rasputin (and ultimately failing).

Each season had a bunch of weapons. All of those weapons had patterns that could be learned. The basic Witch Queen patterns are still available, but all the seasonal ones are gone (or at the very least, much, much more difficult to obtain):

If you played as recently as Beyond Light, then you should still have some viable gear. Only stuff from S10 or older got sunsetted. I still use some armor pieces from S11.

Dunno what else to add.

There was a couple of weapons from Beyond I liked, but I was mostly a sidearm user and of course it was more important to "un-sunset" the more popular weapon types.

Also more importantly, does the end game still hang on the "mods of the season" system to counter the special unstoppable and overload enemies with also having subclass choices completely unsupported for third of a year? That system sucked so much fun out of the game for me.

Not a big sidearm fan myself. But you might want to take a look at Trespasser, which was the Exotic for S17. You should be able to get it from the Kiosk in the Tower, although I think you'll need Witch Queen.

(You might also want to take a look at Traveller's Chosen which was from Beyond Light).

Boudica-C is still in the S20 loot pool.
Empirical Evidence is one of the Witch Queen weapons, you should still be able to get the pattern for that one so you can craft it however you like.
Senuna SI6
Fioritura-59
Redback-5si are all still in the loot pool too.

Yes, they still use the Champion system, yes, they still use the Artifact mods to shift the meta each season.

Mods have been completely redesigned for Lightfall though, and are somewhat easier to work with. A lot more of the benefits are passive, and a lot more of the seasonal mods just have to be unlocked, they don't actually have to be slotted into armor anymore.

Honestly you don't really miss much with Destiny, it's the same thing every expansion. If the story is what interests you, probably be better just watching a recap on YouTube. The game play nor the structure of it ever changes. There's a big bad introduced, it all leads up to confronting that big bad. There's a too short campaign for the money they charge, followed by the standard trope of the same daily routines in the new open-area map for this expansion. That's literally every expansion Destiny has ever had, they never alter or stray from that formula or do anything interesting. So if you got tired of it before, that will happen again because it is no different now than it has ever been.

They have made some quality of life improvements with Witch Queen but also increased the annoyance and grind for some reason, so yeah.

The artifact mods are now perks instead, so you turn one on and it's just on; no need to equip it in a mod slot. The subclasses all have effects that can stun different champions now. Each subclass can stun two different types by applying a specific debuff or kind of damage to it. And a few more exotics have had anti-champion effects added to them since you played last.

Honestly that sounds a lot better, I'm just sour from the initial impression of seasonal mods where void and sidearms didn't have any support, and I just had found out a sweet spot with an Anonymous Autumn and Commander Titan.

I get you. Feeling like I was forced to use specific kinds of weapons all the time wasn't fun. It's a lot better now. You aren't free to just use whatever, but since your abilities can handle some of the champions, and you aren't spending your armor's energy budget on Artifact mods, you've got way more loadout options.

Also, there are actual loadouts now. You can save your currently equipped gear and swap back to it with a click, instead of using 3rd party mobile apps.
