Starting From Scratch - Long Story Short
Played some Destiny on PS4. Loved it but could never find group for raids so dropped it.

Played some Destiny 2 at launch on PC but never really got far. Not sure what expansions I even own. So, if I want to start on either game from scratch, what does that look like right now?

1 - Is Destiny 1 even worth starting or playing nowadays for story/lore/content? (I have a PS5 as well)

2 - If I want to start from scratch on Destiny 2 on PC with every piece of content, what do I need to buy?

Thanks in advance!

Destiny 1 is definitely worth playing in this time, I started playing D1 last summer and I'm still playing it now, the game is well populated.

I wish, i always get placed into strikes alone...9/10 times....it just feels....empty.

Hmmm.. seems like there is a debate there. Without raids, is the story still worth doing first in Destiny 1?

Destiny 1 is an awesome game that, to my surprise, people still play. But it's still better to go there in the company of at least three people. This game, unlike D2, feels more whole, you understand that you can "beat" it. Me and the guys from my clan decided to play D1 about a year and a half ago, see old raids, storylines, exotic missions and it was awesome.

As for Destiny 2, to start playing it and have all the content available now you have to spend a lot of money. First of all, I would recommend buying Lightfall + annual pass - this is the latest expansion that comes out in just an hour and a half. The annual pass will give you access to all of this year's seasons and the two dungeons that will be released in seasons 21 and 23.

After that you can buy the "Legacy/legendary collection", whatever it's called, in general a collection of old expansions. After the release of Lightfall, the developers promised that this collection will include Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, and Witch Queen expansions. The first one is total garbage, the second one too but unlocks a stasis subclass, the third one is probably one of the best expansion in Destiny history, though Forsaken was still better. And speaking of Forsaken...

After that, you can buy the Forsaken pack and the 30th anniversary pack. The first one gives you access to the content of the Dreaming City location and a huge pile of exotics. Keep in mind that Forsaken pack has NO story campaign, it was removed before Witch Queen was released and I will never forgive the developers for that. 30th anniversary pack - this is a mini add-on that gives access to one dungeon (in it you can get Gjallarhorn, if that tells you something) and a bunch of all sorts of cosmetics.

I wish that were all, but it's still unknown what will happen to the dungeon key of Witch Queen, which gives access to Duality and Spire of the Watcher dungeons. It used to be available either in the Deluxe edition of Witch Queen, or as a separate product for $20. I don't know how it will be available now, but I'd recommend buying it last, or choose between it or 30th anniversary.

So there you go. Welcome to Destiny 2... or not welcome.

WOW.. thank you for all that detail! What an absolute travesty to have such a convoluted and complex system for one game. Why would they not do "base game free and all expansions for $50" or something? Insane. I need to re-read and digest this. Starting with downloading Destiny 1 on my PS5 while I try to figure out all that you said for D2 on PC LOL

If you ever want to do raids or play with people you go here. discord.gg/d2lfg. This is Bungies official destiny 2 discord. This is where the entire community goes to find people to do raids, nightfalls, dungeons, strikes, campaign missions, quests, etc for.

Thank you! Is there something similar for D1 raids, etc?

I always say you have to be a bad person and a terrible friend to advise someone to start playing Destiny 2 now. Disgusting monetization, constant removal of content, dead pvp. Trying to understand the storyline of Destiny 2 now - it's like reading a book pages from which are constantly being torn out and replaced by new ones. But if you don't pay attention to the story (or spend 4 hours of your life and watch videos with the story recap on YouTube) - it's one of the best, if not the best, cooperative shooter on the market. The game is beautiful, the music is awesome, the gameplay is great, and I haven't seen anything like the raids here in any other co-op shooter.

Makes perfect sense in your description. An absolute shame that Bungie can't just regroup and make it more new-player friendly. This isn't rocket science but it sure feels like it.

Destiny 1 is still alive n kicking and arguably the better of the two games even. The only thing you won't get on destiny 1 now are any new events, its pretty much in maintenance mode rn, meaning they have a set repeated set of stuff each week on a loop, but certainly worth playing , and destiny 2 speaks for itself, its a good game and worth it

Definitely the easy way to start right? So D2 base is free and then buying lightfall just starts me there right? If i start a new character, that gets me the base game and mission then I just skip to lightfall at max level?

The basic free version is essentially a demo. You can play strikes, pvp, there are even a couple of free raids and dungees, but all the most interesting stuff - new raids, story campaigns, exotic missions - is paid content. You'll probably have to complete the tutorial at cosmodrome first, it won't take more than an hour, and after that you can go straight to Lightfall.

Personally I will start D2 today with all the content of Legacy Collection, so Shadow Keep - Beyond Light - Witch Queen, and when I have done the campaigns I will get Lightfall. I like to follow the story in order, I already watched on youtube the content that is no longer available in game to not miss anything of the story. So it will be fun to finally play the game and do the campaign.
