I remember when you started with 750 power, i had 1400 or so when they switched to 1350 as base power and i lost 50 power, no biggie, but it can be annoying when you do all the higher tier stuff only to lose it when they change the base power levels.
You will be able to infuse them as you increase your light level (don't do it too often though, you won't have that many materials to begin with)
The only thing is you will have to readjust your armor mods as some of them are connected to your artifact which is now obsolete and some of the mods are changed/removed so you'll just have to tinker with that once you launch the game again
The campaign always start off with the first one or two levels being at base light level, so you'll be fine
But you don't HAVE to do them right away, you can hit Escape, then Tab: O to return to Orbit and go access your bank vault if you want to.
But do be sure to go do those intro missions, they'll give you useful info and unlock new stuff. (and give you the Seasonal Artifact).
That said, Bungie heavily increases the gear caps as well, so the new gear will be more useful early on until you eventually reach a stable power level. You still have the choice of infusing, but I wouldn't recommend doing it too much with your old gear until you at least reach the soft cap.
What you lost was the bonus from the seasonal artifact, base power level has never been reduced in this manner.
Alternatively, the START of a season is when they boost the "floor" for Light Level. That means everything, even sunsetted stuff, is bumped up.
That means that it's a very brief window where your old sunsetted gear can be used again.
Those sunset weapons are capped to a maximum level of the lowest light allowed in the current season, to ensure that people technically CAN still play with those weapons, just not effectively so because the dropoff in light level becomes obvious in higher level activities.
This sunsetting had no actual benefit other than removing a bunch of normal legendary weapons from the "can be light-leveled-up" pool, and a few considered-to-be-OP legendaries like Mountaintop and Recluse.
The long story short is that while some weapons existed that were able to be leveled a bit higher than that floor cap, the majority of old weapons that were hit were put at that cap.
The current and recent seasons legendary weapons should not soon, if ever, meet that fate, as the sunsetting was a one-time brainfart from Bungie meant to simply upset and troll people.
So no, your weapons wont disappear.
Sidenote: is it correct to say "sunsetted"? Genuine question, English isn't my native language, and I spent I while thinking which one was the correct term. At first I considered "sunseted" (with a single "t"), but then I concluded "sunset" should be the correct past tense, since it's also identical for "set".
I was about to answer "but if Bungie regret that, why they don't 'un-sunset' capped stuff". Then I re-answered myself, that would enrage players who already destroyed that legendary stuff, no one is as crazy as me to still keep that around.
ah ok, does that mean that i am going to start getting blue gear again? it already took me a bit to reach the powerful cap the first time around and i only infused my exotic gear when i had them equipped, i even bought some enhancement cubes or whatever to help, but if my legendary shards are reset its gonna be a bit more difficult
i know you can skip those but except for the campaign intro, i didnt know where to get the seraph cipher at all until i found it on accident, so it might be best that i do the missions first and then get my stuff from the vault to be safe.
