(Spoiler) Was the Traveller Actually Going To Leave
I've seen the videos (have yet to actually play the mission myself), but was the Traveller actually going to abandon the Last City?

the traveler was leaving because there was a threat to it that it could not face through light alone. It stayed put because that threat was eliminated and now it will continue to do it's duty to protect the guardians on earth, just...a little higher up now

No. Its my opinion the Traveler knew of the imminent threat. Instead of letting the warsats shoot while over the Last City and possible colatteral damage decided to reposition to a higher orbit.

Its also possible the thought of fleeing DID happen. But chose against it due to Rasputin's sacrafice.

Remember the Guardian creed.

I dont remember it all but Bravery leads to Sacrifice. Sacrifice leads to death.

Devotion inspires bravery. Bravery leads to sacrifice. Sacrifice leads to death.

Doesnt the traveler love mankind?

I mean, if you have a whole civilisation adoring you because you give them super powers, why would you not prefer to stay in the safety of those people who you made into nearly unkillable war mongering cavemen in return of them simply worshipping you because of what you are.

A symbiosis so to say, humans and exos and awoken get light, and use it to destroy enemies of the traveler. If that doesn't actually make the traveler into some sort of semi-villain...

The traveler's general strategy while fleeing from the witness has been to enhance the technological capacity of intelligent species it finds (eliksni and human, as far as we know), and use them as its shield. Presumably, it decides we are not strong enough to defeat the witness, and as he draws close, it intends to abandon us the same way it abandoned the eliksni, hoping we slow them down enough to buy it a chance to escape. This time however, its lingering hope in humanity meant it made the choice too late, and is now boxed in the solar system by the pyramid fleet with us. We are now its only hope, and last stand

"The Traveller is now boxed in the solar system by the pyramid fleet with us" That was my impression. The traveller wanted to leave but it realized it was trapped so now it is stuck in orbit. ALso, the idea that the traveller protects Earth is not completely supported by the various story lines. More ambiguous than that.

I don't think it loves. I think it's trying to protect itself by using local populations. And when it senses too much danger, it runs. Like it did with the Fallen, who also loved and worshipped it.

But now there's nowhere left for it to run. It's forced to stay here and hope.

It'd be interesting to know why it loves humanity so much, I mean, sure, we're totally lovable, but it granted us special powers which it didn't offer to the Eliksni. Has it been uplifting various races out of benevolence, or is it looking for the ideal champion who can stand against The Witness?

Anyway, my thoughts? The Traveler knows this it is cornered, it moved away from the Last City so that IF the Warsats couldn't be stopped, the city wouldn't suffer collateral damage. Either from the barrage or from the debris.
Maybe it has a reason to keep its distance even now that danger has been averted.

No.

If the Traveler was gonna leave it already would have before the Destiny games even take place.

If it was leaving it wouldn't have stopped.

Some like to claim that it stopped because the Witness has our solar system blocked but that is simply untrue.

Our solar system alone is so vastly big that for the Witness to box us in would require so many Pyramid ships that it would actually be impossible for us to win under any circumstances.
