Also once you get up to around 1530 light level, start doing hero nightfalls (the highest tier nightfall with matchmaking) and also do the legendary lost sectors (they rotate every day, light.gg should have whichever lost sector is in rotation.)
It's under the vanguard tab in the map view, just as you enter the strikes, you have three icons, the top center is standard strikes, the bottom left is for nightfalls (and you'll want to change the difficulties to hero, not adept once you reach 1530 light) and the bottom right is Grand master nightfalls which is Raid level endgame stuff
Just read the modifiers because you'll need to equip certain mods on your arm armor to deal with the champions (You have modified armor mods before...right?)
Honestly, where you are right now, the "best" is what you're comfortable with. As you play more you'll see how things synergize (arc weapons with arc subclasses, devour for health regen, how to generate orbs of light for various things, elemental wells, etc) and a lot of that relies on armor mods to get the most out of your build
But like I said, where you are now, just equip your favorite stuff and enjoy (also when you start getting to 1570, you'll want to start taking better looks at the perks and how they work, because having a really good perk setup can make or break a god-tier weapon)
All armor mods recently just got unlocked, so you don't have to worry about them
But here's a quick rundown
1. Each armor has an elemental affinity (Solar, Arc, Void, Stasis) which determines what elemental mods you can use (all elements allow for "generic" mods, but you can't put solar mods on a void piece of armor, for example) this video is three years old, but it's a good overview that should help you dip your toes into armor mods https://youtu.be/EPDiqB0CV3o
2. Each armor has a "charge" and if you get that charge to 10, you have it masterworked and bumps the overall stats up of that armor (you want to generally start with armors that have 60+ total stats to get a feel for what stats do what. Later on you can do min/maxing with "spikey" armors, or armors that have super high rolls in either one or two stats)
3. As you upgrade your armor you'll need materials: enhancement shards (which are relatively easy to get) enhancement prisms (not hard to get, but certainly not common, best place is through nightfalls imo) and then ascendant shards (to masterwork your armor. Legendaries require only one, exotics require two if I remember correctly)
Right now, don't worry about it, but just keep an eye on your stats as you equip various armor pieces and see how it affects your playstyle
Me? I main a hunter, but I have a high strength stat so I can perform my melee ability quickly, and a high intellect to charge my super as quickly as possible, and lastly a good resilience stat because despite being a hunter I know I get caught out a lot so I invest in resilience so I can at least survive my mistakes
If you want some video guides (and again, you don't HAVE to follow them, but they provide some good overall tips) check out on youtube
1. FalloutPlays (good overall stuff and the one I recommend the most for a newer player, also does quick Xur visit videos which are fun)
2. Datto (good testing environment, and overall Destiny 2 news/health of the game/etc)
3. AztecCross (more advanced testing and build crafting)
