As someone who just crossed 10,000 pvp matches today and a lifetime top 1% (1.1% if we're being pedantic) k/d, I can say that PvP being unfun isn't a skill issue. If anything with SBMM it's even less fun because there's no reward for improving.
Crucible shouldn't be a thing, not for any reason other than that it's unhealthy for d2. It's a minigame with a fraction of playerbase participation (warmind.io shows only about 10% of the playerbase engage in pvp daily) that has sweeping balance effects on the entire game. More than a handful of exotics have been ruined in the actual game because of crucible.
Also, it's never going to be competitive. No matter how many comp "reworks" they do (we're probably on 10 iterations right about now) or how many symbolic, incompetent balance changes they make, it will never be competitive until there's actual dedicated servers. D2 has an inexcusable networking structure for a game with sub 1 second TTK.
My advice to anyone who plays d2 is just to stay as far away from pvp as possible. I don't even know why I'm playing the mode anymore, I just keep doing it. The meta right now is awful and SBMM just needs to be outright deleted. Bungie has already admitted they don't have the playercount to make it work - and it doesn't work.
