Destiny 2

Destiny 2

View Stats:
Started playing, FPS drops and generally unstable FPS.
I need some advice on how to stabilize my fps, and generally tips on how to make the game run better on a old post-Yugoslavian Frankenstein of a PC. Everything is up to date, including Windows, here's the rig:

Operating system: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro (10.0, Build 19044)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4430 CPU @ 3.00GHz 4/4
RAM: 16 GB
Graphics card: Radeon RX 570 Series (4 GB)
Monitor: HPN HP 27w (1920x1080 / 27.2 Inch)

My refresh rate on Monitor is 60Hz, so I have enabled Vsync to 60, and enabled the fps cap to 60 in hopes to stabilize the fps. I also did minor stuff like, disable all unnecessary programs, make the game run in High Priority, DPI settings to application + Disable Fullscreen Optimizations, set the game in Graphic Settings to use High option for my GPU, and made sure everything is up to date. Also installed on SSD. I also tried forcing DX12 by typing -dx12 in Steam launch options, but I don't think that did anything. Also tried to use Reshade to fix the awful anti-alias in this game, but quickly realized it is a blocked program, which is a real shame.

Any help is appreciated!

"enabled Vsync to 60"
That usually guts performance or adds input delay in my experience.
DX12 is usually worse performance and somewhat iffy currently to my knowledge.

Open task manager, go to performance, go run around in a strike or something. See if any of your cpu cores are peaking or if gpu is peaking. I doubt you should be running high settings on that if you want frame stability. Likely low everything and disable what you can. Either way try it after on minimum settings and see if your cpu or gpu is peaking. You can't overclock that cpu, so if its peaking you're likely SOL until you can upgrade everything.

Also as a note for future, Nvidia has 'freestyle' which is basically reshade with a ton of options in most popular games. I don't think its compatible with destiny 2 either though.

All that said I've had issues in certain updates with frame drops.

Performance has been getting worse ever since Beyond light for me, might be a game thing.

Without Vsync, the game has cringeworthy screen tearing. But maybe leaving the FPS cap on could fix this if the Vsync was off?

Try leaving the in-game cap on and lowering or raising it a few fps above or below your monitor refresh rate to see if it fixes. Also confirm your monitor refresh rate in windows or amd software.

Maybe theres an issue with 60fps monitors or something as well? Even with g sync off I cant remember the last time I had screen tearing.

If you could figure out how to enable fast sync it might offer better performance https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/comments/6x4vg8/question_ways_to_eliminate_screen_tearing_without/

I don't use amd so I have no idea what settings to play with there.

Or maybe check some random 'destiny screen tearing vsync' threads? Theres one here that says to use fullscreen windowed. https://www.reddit.com/r/destiny2/comments/l9ld5w/simple_fix_for_screen_tearing_on_destiny_2_pc/

This is some good info. The person says that fps cap is for G/FreeSync monitors, but how do I know if my monitor is one of the two? Also I'll try Fullscreen Windowed.

G-sync and Amd free-sync are big selling points with monitors, it'd likely be in title itself on any online listing. (For future ref when you get one, you go into nvidia control panel to set up gsync and see if your monitor has it, amd likely has an equivalent way to setup freesync)

I thought the 'fast-sync' might work for you, but it looks like it still requires one of those or hdmi 2.1VRR which is made for 4k+. You'd likely just have to play with the fps cap ingame and run borderless windowed to try and remove tearing without the vsync performance hit.

Ok, so wow, my fps has greatly stabilized after I did this:

1. Set the game on Windowed Fullscreen.
2. Setting the FPS limit to 59 FPS, so that just looking around I get 1 FPS drop, opposed to 15+ FPS drop.
3. Enabling the Radeon Enhanced Sync setting in my AMD software, while having the in-game Vsync setting off.

I will try to play with graphical settings to see if I can make the game look better now that my fps can hold it's ground. I haven't had this stable fps since I discovered TES5:Skyrim, work properly only with 59 FPS cap :D

EDIT: If the Steam fps counter can be trusted ofc.

Ok I took a look at your specs vs Destiny 2 and its not your GPU but your CPU thats messing with things. Try running the game with Mid settings and work you way up.

IDK a lot about PCs now days, seeing I just got back into gaming and i puchased a prebuilt for now. I did a look up of your card vs mine and heres the results.

I dont run 100% of the time above 60 FPS at 1440p, but 1080p maxed settings, I stay well above 60-80+ FPS. I also have 32 GB of system memory and a Ryzen 7 3700x.

I would try lowing your settings to all Mid/low and slowly increase some settings. To me your right on the end of D2 recommended settings. Plz know that you cant always go by a games Minimum or Recommend settings, with each update or new DLC, those settings can easily be higher than the last known settings posted by the Dev Team.

9Dragons is a game that comes to mind that I used to play for almost 16 yrs and you try and run it with the min required settings now and the game wont be playable.

Glad it works! You might also want to test out a few different activities to see if the fps stays stable when the cpu or gpu is working harder.

Absolutely true. Now that some players and enemies have spawned my fps dropped by 6-7 Fps. Does any of you know what is some of the harder requiring settings I can put to lowest?
MissGrimReaper Oct 11, 2022 @ 3:09pm
I'm already running a mix of Low and Medium settings. How hard does Screen Space Ambient Occlusion affect fps stability? Should I leave it on off?

Try some of these settings.

Anti-Aliasing: SMAA.
Screen Space Ambient Occlusion: HDAO.
Texture Anisotropy: Off
Texture Quality: Mid
Shadow Quality: Mid or Low
Depth of Field: Mid or Low
Environment Detail Distance: Mid or Low
Character Detail Distance: Mid

I think its FoV (Feild of View) - I use 100 or 85, can't recall Im not in game (It might be Rendering Scale thats 85 and FoV is 100 for me).

I dont want your game to look like an old PS/Xbox game, so try a setting at a time.

you want to see how your FPS holds up, go to the Moon and harbor of Sorrow Public Event and watch your FPS. For me that event can show you how some other places may run. I havent seen to many other places in game that can drop your FPS like that place.

Heres my vid of me testing my settings a while back.

RTX 2060 Max settings.

It isn't just you i have a ryzen 5 5600x rtx 3060ti 32gb ram and i get 90 frames on the moon with a lot of settings turned lowest or off the only setting i have maxed is texture quality and thats it. A game made in 2017 is crippling current gen high end hardware and it is unacceptable.

I have been having a very similar issue only starting about a week ago, i'm running a 3070ti, 16 gb ram and 11th gen I7. Even during inspecting weapons and armour my frames are dropping to 30 fps. It seems ever time something is loading in the background my game staggers for a couple of seconds.
In some ways i'm happy i can't play anymore, I just want to know what's going on?
