If you login to that link with your Steam account, you can easily join random groups and raids. There are runs where people teach the raids and there are runs that are marked as chill. Works very well in my case.
High stat armor you can get outside of raids, and the raid weapons can easily be replaced by other guns. A raid weapon won't blow your mind compared to non raid weapons. They're basically "same same, but different, but still the same" type of deal. Some raids have exclusive exotic weapons that you may want to get eventually. Again here the most used exotics are non raid exotics. Arbalest, Gjallarhorn, Xenophage etc etc.
TL;DR You can't solo raids, but you can easily LFG raids and raid gear is by no means a "must have".
But in terms of gear there's no need to raid.
Except some loots from 6 person raid activity, you can do solo to get better loots. But it has a less efficiency.
I have all raid weapons, but I don't even use them that much often especially when I'm on the solo activity. When I'm not on the solo activity, I can say The eyes of tomorrow is the only raid weapon that I often pick for the Gambit, and sometime I pick Divinity, but for the only multiplayers activities, not for the solo. The higher difficulty activity has the specific modifiers like a champion modifiers or an element barriers. Because of those modifiers, you have a very certain limited weapon choice and some of raid weapons you can't even pick especially if you want do solo. You have to pick a certain weapons that can stun champions and also you have to pick each element type of weapons. There's only few cases you can use raid exotic weapons. Of course raid weapons are very good when you're not a solo but when you're think about solo, it's only good when you're on low difficulty activity that has no modifiers, at least this season.
