"Primary" is the ammo type. They're all Primaries. Some are Kinetic, some are Stasis (which go into the Kinetic slot, because Stasis just has to be difficult), and some are Energy (Arc, Solar and Void).

I also probably wouldn't lump Auto Rifles and SMGs together.

For Auto RIfles, the Krait, Come To Pass, Firefright, and Sweet Sorrow are probably the easiest to get at the moment. Xur had a pretty good Gnawing Hunger last week, but I don't know what his stock will be this week.

Banshee-44 currently has a Krait that's "okay". Personally, I'd rather have one with Headstone on it.

The Krait is the one I carry around with me, The Firefright seems decent enough and can be crafted. Sweet Sorrow can also be crafted, and is decent if you need an Arc AR.

SMGs typically have higher rates of fire, but less overall effective range.

The Funnelweb, the CALUS Mini-tool, the Enyo-D, the Forensic Nightmare, the Pizzicato-22, Out of Bounds, and the Blood Feud are probably the easiest to get at the moment.

Of those, Funnelweb and the CALUS Mini-tool are extremely popular, The CALUS Mini-tool can be crafted and synergizes with the MIDA Multi-Tool Exotic Scout Rifle. I've used both the Enyo-D and the Forensic Nightmare quite a bit and both are okay. Haven't really used the others much. Aesthetically, I like the Blood Feud a lot.

By Primary i assume you mean Kinetic.

The best of these are usually just crafted weapons, for SMG's its probably the Submission, from the Vow of the Disciple raid. Forensic Nightmare is okay, Escape Velocity, which drops from Dares of Eternity (when its in rotation) is a nice choice too.

Kinetic Auto's there isn't a great deal which you can get right now, that are relevant, but Auto's then again are the worst PVE primary ammo weapon in the game right now, besides Sidearms. Krait (A Stasis Kinetic Auto) can be farmed from the Veist Stinger Engram at the Star Chart in the H E L M this season.

If you are looking for secondary / elemental versions of these gun in the second slot; Calus Mini-Tool (Season of the Haunted Loot Pool), Funnelweb (can also be acquired from the Veist Stinger Engram in the Star Chart), Ikelos SMG (Prophecy Dungeon & Dares of Eternity Loot Pool), the Unforgiven SMG (Drops from the Vault Encounter and Caitl in the Duality Dungeon). For autorifle, Krait, Duty Bound and Chroma Rush

If you want them for PVP then Suros Regime and Duty Bound are really good, smgs Submission and Multimach if they ever add it again to the Iron Banner loot table

Weapons I use constantly are Sweet Sorrow (AR), Krait (AR), Calus Mini-Tool (SMG), Funnelweb (SMG) and Borrowed Time (SMG). For me 720 RPM autorifles and 900 RPM SMGs that has 37-40 round mags. All top tier PvE weapons.
