Why is my power level not rising?

Newbie here
The soft cap is 1270 right?
My weakest item equipped is 1212 but my power is still at 1205 and all my drops are like 1212 or 1208 (Im guessing that's bad luck).

Why is my power at 1205 when all my gear has a higher power than it?

Your drops are based on your base light level. To see this, go to the season tab and hover over an exotic. You base is calculated by the highest you can be even if the gear is in the vault or on another character. If that Mark is the highest light level one you have, it's holding you back.

Your power level is correct. Add the levels of all your weapons and armor and divide by 8. Then add 5 from the seasonal artifact and you get 1205.5.

What's holding you back the most is your class item at 1128.

You gain power levels by earning xp and pinnacle weapons and armor.

The fastest way to earn xp is by doing bounties. Every day you log in you should go to Banshee-44 and Zavala and except the daily bounties.

If you play PVP then you should go to Lord Shaxx. If you play Gambit then go to The Drifter.

You should also except the weekly and daily bounties offered by the Guardians and vendors on the EDZ and the moons when you visit them.

Your 1128 class item is dragging down your average gear score badly. Once you replace that and your boots with something closer level to your other gear, you will progress a bit faster again.

Doing some PVP will get you a lot of quick easy powerful items as well as some upgrade currency from Shaxx.
