It's a third party anti-cheat system. It allows game companies to contract out their anti-cheat needs. A number of games (that have PvP modes) use it.

As for whether or not it runs when the game isn't running, I dunno.

Ennh... the game has been more laggy for me since they started using Battleye. Not unplayable, but I've noticed a performance hit.

There has been a noticeable perfomance hit on my side as well, but it isn't deterring me from playing the game. I have yet to see a cheater in any crucible games since the time it was introduced.

Hi there!

To be crystal clear, BattlEye does not stay running in the background once Destiny 2 is closed.

For more information, please review the FAQ below.

https://www.battleye.com/support/faq/

You can also contact BattlEye if you have any other questions regarding their software.

You're lucky then. For me it's just one more reminder that my current desktop is starting to get old.

depend of the game detect (badly and late) the use of cheats or suspicious programs and tag you and on the next ban wave you will be banned i don´t know if in Destiny the ban is intant or in ban waves like on tarkov

in any case the cheat developers always have an advantage and it is the battleyeye workers who have to constantly update their anticheat

this anticheat on tarkov is near useless the EU servers are full of macros-aimbots-ESP-radars-flying cheaters and more on destiny is pretty decent but still there are a lot of cheat unetectable wich enable ESP or increase the aim assist of this game to aimbot levels
ive got no fears of being banned, its just i only have the one computer so something that goes sniffing around while im playing a game had better not be sniffing when im off the game and doing important private information involved stuff.

At the release of Season of Lost, the entry newsletters, one of them warned about Battle-eye would cause rutabaga error and will cause much more of perfomance loss.

After that I kept playing but 10-14 fps of diference which makes much diference when you are hitting 30 fps or lower all the freaking time is depressing.

Technically it should close itself when Destiny 2 is closed, but these are the details people have to harverst from the fine print usually. Unfortunately these anti cheat are applied globally as i understand, rather than specifically triggered when needed like at the beginning of a PVP session. So it keeps monitoring and gathering sensitive information.

I do my finance and work on my main PC, but considering to move my gaming to another PC in the future because of these 3rd party apps sniffing way too deeper than necessary at times when not even needed.

It it continues running, then that's most likely a bug. You can stop the BattlEye service in the Services tab of Task Manager (and the next time you launch Destiny 2 it should start up again without issue).
