Minimum Light Level
Just read that the minimum light level next week is going up to 1350. So does that mean all the levelling I've done this week was completely pointless? And why does the minimum go up? Doesn't that defeat the entire purpose of trying to level up? Is there something I'm missing?

Every major DLC (~each year, unless delayed) they move the power floor and caps, so you have to grind 100-200 power levels. Each season (~3 months usually) they move caps by 10 (used to be 50), e.g. in BL the floor was 1100 and 1260 was the max, now the max gear score is 1330. 1350 is the floor and 1560 is the max in WQ.

There're several caps in the game. Any gear dropped will have higher level until you reach the soft cap (1500 in WQ), to reach the powerful cap (1550) you will have to do weeklies and get powerful and pinnacle rewards. Pinnacle cap (1560) requires pinnacles to reach it (some weeklies and hard content like raids and NFs). The 2nd WQ season will increase those caps by 10, so 1510 will be the soft, 1560 - powerful and 1570- pinnacle, etc. until the next major DLC.

it was useless because you started playng right now, those levels where required to do some activities this season. No, it does not defeat the entire purpose of trying to level up, because the purpuse is to take part to those activities, a season usually lasts 3 months and you will take 3 weeks to be appropriately levelled (approximately).

ps: only the big dlcs have such a big power increse

Ok I get that, but none of it explains why people need to be boosted to 1350. Playing below the softcap for me is the best part of the game as you can essentially play what you want and when you want and still advance. So why would you shorten that?

Bungie uses DLCs to renew (as in change completely) the game instead of releasing new Destiny titles. We get Beyond Light and Witch Queen DLC instead of Destiny 3, and the game is about as different as a new title across maybe 3 DLCs. It's in this framework everyone is effectively zeroed what power-level is concerned between DLCs (and xp between seasons). It's a good thing and you're not loosing out on anything.

So is it effectively going to stay at 1350 for roughly 2 years? (Or a time frame of that scale)

Think of it as when a new expansion is released, the LL every one is pushed to (if below/whatever) is basically zero. Just without it actually being zero. So you have until the next expansion for that "reset" back to zero. So levelling up during the expansion/seasons allows you to do those higher level activities.

What I meant was, I'm relatively new. Does this happen once a month? once a year?
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

You dont wana grind too hard towards the end of the season.
These are the caps for next season:
1350 - you'll start here
1350 to 1500 - play normal activites
1500 to 1550 - need to do powerful gear activites (has weekly limit)
1550 to 1560 - need to do pinnacle gear rewards (weekly limit as well)

I expect the absolute power level cap will increase by maybe 10 for each season, so every 3 months you'll be doing pinnacle activities to get topped off. Maybe the starting power level, power-cap and pinnacle cap will also increase by the same (10). Then in maybe a year or so the next DLC drops and we'll have a new starting power level at perhaps 1600 that effectively zeroes us again. I have no inside information mind you, it's just what I expect will happen.

For the last year the start of each new season increases the starting light level by 10 points.

As this is the start of an entirely new expansion they have raised the starting light level to 1350 so nobody should be able to grind higher than this during the current expansion and start the new one with a "head start".

Nothing is wasted, but anyone starting this game in the final week of a 6 month season is REALLY late to the party :-)

The whole point of leveling now is to be as high as possible obviously, but leveling before DLC's release isn't a smart idea, as the light level is raised to the ,ax for everyone because of the drastic raising of light level once the new one starts.
