How does global Chat work

I've never seen this in an MMO but the chat is totally dead for me, or is ACTUALLY no one using it?

You have to manually enter the local chat channel, it is off by default. That means if you say something, a lot of people will not see it. If you haven't enabled it yourself, then you are sending messages to your non-existent fireteam.
So yeah you won't see that much chat activity.

Well there is really no global chat to message all people

theres no real global chat theres only area chats or team or squad chats

The issue with the global chat is that beside its just local it is not the default setting of the game so everyone has allways change it to local to comunicate over it. Because of this bad implementation of the chat it is barely used at all. Main reason for this is that Bungie doesn't want the need of moderators for those channels. Overall a very bad conclusion for a mmo like game.

Yeah, and the P2P network architecture of this game pretty much precludes having any sort of "global" chat I think.

Personally, I have a problem with noticing the chat during gameplay -- partly because of its position, but also because it pops up so infrequently that my brain kinda ignores that area of the screen.

Same. On the rare occasion that someone types something in chat, I don't see it until 30 minutes later. I find that a lot of games struggle with having the text chat either get in the way or be easy to miss.
