can you still complete the messages from aunor lorebook?

I've got 5 of them despite not being around for the allegiance quest when it was running. Just wanted to complete the book before the season ended if possible

Yes you can, I completed it this season.
However note that siding with the Drifter will not let you get all the lorre entries. You will need one of your character to side with the Vanguard and complete that side of the questline to get all of the entries.

How can you side with either now? The first search result on the allegiance quest says its no longer available

The weekly rewards for completing it are no longer available, those were only given in S6.
But 'Honor Among Thieves' has definitely not become unavailable, I believe I saw the site you mentioned and it's talking rubbish. I didn't even play during S6, I started and completed the Drifter side of the quest on my Titan during Season of Opulence, I started and finished the Vanguard side on my Warlock this season. My Hunter still has the quest and she also picked it up this season.

There are surely some steps to getting it to appear, might have to have done enough of the New Light quests on that character all the way up to unlocking Gambit Prime and the Reckoning, before it appears.

I'd like to know exactly how you're starting that quest then because everything I can find says it's not possible

You can still do the quest. It should be available after you complete the quest "Gambit in its Prime".

ffs. I missed out on the entire reckoning because I didn't know that quest step was a prerequisite. I had plenty of time to finish it, but now I won't get to before it's vaulted because online guides are ♥♥♥♥ at explaining things to players who weren't around for that specific season

Just make sure you filter for recent results when you're Googling.

Not for the messages from the nine, which are part of reckoning. I have 5 more invitations from xur, but only 3 weeks left.

You don't have to do those messages for Gambit in its Prime though.

You don't do the invitations for the Aunor book, you get the Aunor book through picking the Vanguard on the Allegiance quest.

The lore books come from the Allegiance quest, but if you pick Drifter, you can only get the first five.

The first five are given as messages from the postmaster.
