If you are new and want to progress the story, you buy Forsaken first, then you see Cyade-6 dying - a guy you don't knew, never met. Basically you go on a space western adventure to avenge a guy you don't know or care about, because you never played (or will) the previous 3 campaigns where you establish emotional connection with the characters.
Bungie never thought what a heckin confusion that will cause in brand new players who are not informed about Destiny Lore. All they want is to grab your money and drop you in the middle of season 5 of a famoous TV show, confused and puzzled, if this was a tv show.
I'd argue that Crow and Uldren are different individuals that just have the same face, seeing as how the personality and memories of the latter are gone. Guardians are revived as completely new people.
Hell, Cayde would've likely lived if his dumb ass didn't knock out comms by dropping part of the prison on himself or pulling out Sundance in front of his enemies.
