Getting it to drop is RNG. After you get it, it's 1000 to unlock it.

You can get it randomly by playing strikes or crucible.
To unlock it, you need to kill 500 enemies with direct hits and 1000 enemies with the aoe explosion. These can be killed anywhere, not just in strikes.

It goes like this,
Step 1 - Play Strikes and Crucible until it drops for you. It is totally random and you can't do anything to increase the chances.
Step 2 - For Y1 catalysts, you insert them straight away (it will let it produce orbs of light even without completing the catalyst)
Step 3 - Now you've got to follow the catalyst's instructions. For Sunshot it is to kill 500 enemies directly, and 1,000 with the weapon's Sun Blast special effect.
Step 4 - When you've done this, it will say 'Masterwork Objective Complete', you re-apply the catalyst in the same way as Step 2, but this time it masterworks the exotic and adds the catalyst's stat boosts/special perks - in this case a range and stability increase.

Y2 and later catalysts don't get inserted at step 2. You just go straight onto working on meeting their objectives before you can insert it.

Yes you can use anything. It drops from the chest at the end like some other catalysts, based on nothing but luck.

It's never dropped for me, had it for a long time and nothing. Just got the ace of spades yesterday and it dropped a catalyst on my first gambit run lol. *shrugs*

Had it drop for me today. Need to find a good farm spot now to farm the 1,000 kills with the weapon's Sun Blast special effect.

Any recommended spots now that whisper has gone?

It drops in Strikes and Crucible. You can check in Triumphs to see where the Catalysts drop. I got mine yesterday in Crucible comp.

If it makes you feel better I've had hard light for years and I got the catalyst today.

Last wish raid, shuro chi encounter. There's a code you can input at the wall of wishes that takes you straight there. Start the encounter, kill a bunch of ♥♥♥♥, die and restart.

Wait so for the catalyst to drop in a strike, can it drop from strike enemies or only from the chest at the end? I am trying to get in now by repeating lake of shadows over and over so does anyone have any suggestions? I don't have beyond light so i can't do the nightfall.

Only from the chest at the end. As far as suggestions, I don't have any sadly. Just do a lot of strikes and hope you get lucky. I don't know if repeating lake of shadows is the best way to do it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.
For me I just played without paying too much attention to the catalyst, and eventually it dropped.
It's a good catalyst but nothing amazing, so don't stress too much over it.
