Ager's Scepter - big drawback
It seems like a great weapon, except.... it takes up a primary weapons slot but doesn't get unlimited ammo like other primary weapons. So to use this weapon you have to give up the new unlimited ammo game feature. I wish I had known that before spending time on that quest. It makes it unusable for me, as I've been using a legendary autogun that really takes advantage of the unlimited ammo.

All Power weapons take Heavy ammo, but there are Primary and Special weapons for both Kinetic and Energy slots. You can use a Kinetic Special weapon (Ager's Scepter) with an Energy Primary, for example the seasonal auto rifle Chrysura Melo.

All special weapons have limited ammo because they are more powerful than primary weapons. Using one of each is typically ideal so you have a mix of infinite ammo for regular enemies and high damage for harder enemies.

primary weapon =/= kinetic weapons

there are primary energy weapons, not sure how this has passed you quite honestly

I assumed any weapon in the primary slot would use the new unlimited ammo game mechanic. Here's an article I read -

"But the biggest surprise was Bungie's decision to completely remove Destiny 2's Primary ammo. All Primary weapons now have infinite ammo and never need to worry about running out. Primary weapons will still need to reload, but their reserves will be infinite."

It sort of gimps the new feature to have Ager's Scepter use the primary slot if it doesn't take advantage of the new feature.

Yeah, I am confused. I thought primary meant the weapon in slot 1. 🤦‍♂️

as Nibbie said, the first slot is not the 'primary' slot, it's the kinetic/stasis slot and there can be both primary and special weapons in that slot, just as there can be primary and special weapons in the energy slot.

primaries: auto rifles, smgs, sidearms, pulse rifles, handcannons, scout rifles, bows
special weapons: shotguns, snipers, trace rifles, fusion rifles, breach load grenade launchers, some linear fusion rifles

(there are a handful of exotic weapons that are exceptions to that, Vex Mythoclast is a primary fusion, and Eriana's Vow is a special handcannon for example)

edit: apparently the word Nib-bie is censored by steam lol

There are 3 ammo types
Primary
Special
Heavy
Primary slot does not mean it uses primary ammo. It may be in a primary slot but it is NOT a kinetic weapon.

I'm more impressed that so many people have gone this late into the season and never noticed that their energy AR, SMG, Scoult, Pulse, Bow, Sidearm, or Hand Cannon has had infinite ammo.

Or that for the last the last 4+ weeks, their kinetic shotgun or sniper didn't have infinite ammo.

It has 500+ ammo in my inventory. Doesn't eat much and packs a punch. You also need it to progress in the Ascendant Realm secrets. There is plenty ammo boxes around. Masterwork isn't hard either. It's a great weapon.
