weekly bungie posts have stated you had to reach majestic first and then use either silver or bright engram to buy it as a ornament...
IF you could just buy the set as ornament without anything, then they wouldnt even had to add the event for it..
You don't need to complete the subsequent, considerably grindier set of objectives to reach 'Magnificent' level which is the second legendary set.
I know it's dependant on how much free time people have, but many, many people have already hit that Majestic level today, including me. It could easily be done over a week in small portions if that's as far as you wanted to take it.
Hey man I'll give it a go, I think I remember starting from Grey, this year seems to start at blue! This gave me a little hope, I'll try it out after work :)! Sounds incredible that people and you already have majestic!!
This vid helps lay the requirements out in a logical order -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ow932fUSbyc (he has one for Warlocks and Hunters too)
So when I was doing Crucible and Gambit matches/kills for a Titan, I was also making sure I was getting the necessary amount of Crucible/Gambit Void orbs so I didn't have to come back and replay them for more.
