(Though it seems I didn't read the last part, my bad)
As far as I know focusing always changes the power of an umbral to be your power level. I lost a high level powerful that way when I was climbing to 1050. Focusing is useful to bring lower slots up to your level, but not for going up unfortunately.
I don't do the dungeons so maybe I would have got armour from there but from Strikes, Crucible, Gambit, Hawthorne and Means To An End mission every drop has been a weapon and I don't need weapons I need Armour!
