That's basically it, from what I can tell.
A lot of groups just want to get int, get their loot and get out. Taking on newer players can extend a raid considerably, so it's better to communicate that you'll need to be told what to do first, rather than keep it as an unpleasant surprise for later and risk people getting frustrated.
There are plenty of groups that will be willing to teach people how to do raids, just make sure you check in advance.
The elemental damage type usually isn't important, but the rest of your loadout is. What you should be using really depends on the raid and the strategy that your group has chosen to run with though.
