Umbral Engrams Without Season Pass?

I read that it is possible to open umbral engrams without owning the season pass.
Is that correct and how can I do it? All the information I found did not help.

- what do I need to do to be able to open them? A brief step by step info would be nice.

How far are you into the game? If you just started it then keep playing hte game explains itself

Drifter is your answer, google him and all quests associated to him

I am quite at the beginning of red war (3 or 4 missions), visitied the drifter but he had no quests for me.

Guess I just need to keep playing to unlock them

One of my newbie friends has a similar issue, I explained the umbrals to him but he just couldn't access it and never got the IO mission with Eris. Someone else told him he has to be light level 800+ to access it. He hasn't reached that level yet, but I hope that's the issue.

The quest chain starts on Io having you look for Eris, like Sync said. I believe the quest is titled In the Face of Darkness, or A Shadow Overhead. After that I think that was when you need to go see the Drifter, and he gives you a quest to do a public event on Io or Titan that has a level requirement of around 1000. After doing that you get access to the machine that opens the engrams. I'm only level ~800 so I wound up having to wait for a group to start doing the mission and I piggybacked off them.

So start by checking Io and see if you have a mission their with one of those two names.

finally did it:

for all who have the same issue.

Right after I finished red war and did all follow up conversations ion the tower (accepted all quests from these conversations), I travelled to IO where the eris quest started. after that I had to talk to the drifter in the tower, then do "contact" on IO and return back to the drifter.
