Really dumb question about the Forge

Every time I see "the Forge", it's usually linked with "AFK" exploits, but to be honest, I have no idea what the Forge is, other than the forge that's near Drifter. But I can't do anything with that device, with Drifter, or that terminal next to the two of them. So having seen thread after thread that are just complaining, I have a legitimate question that I can imagine a lot of newbies wanting to ask:

1. When they're talking about the Forge, is it the device they're talking about? Or is it some kind of mission that people queue for?

2. What exactly triggers that whole Umbral thing from being able to be used? Is there a quest, a mission, a pvp match, or something that then starts Drifter to being more relevant to me? I ask this because I'm full on those purple Umbral things (and can't get any more), but I seriously can't figure out what to do with the ones that I have.

Sorry for the noobie questions, but sometimes, it's all I have.

1. The Forge is an activity in the EDZ (Earth). You should get a quest to unlock it from Ada-1.

2. You should have had a mission on Io called "A Shadow Overhead". It's a mandatory mission, you get it when you first log in or if you somehow miss it, you have to pick it on Io. After that, Drifter should give you the ability to decode engrams at the machine beside him.

As for other stuff, Drifter is over the game mode called "Gambit", which is a PVEVP style mode. You can pick up Gambit related bounties and quests from him in the Tower.

1. It is an activity. Technically a forge, you forge weapons & armor there. There is a separate title for the forges only, check it out in your Triumphs in game.
2. You should know that some players are saying you wouldn't be able to complete the first mission for the 11th season main event solely because you have full inventory of umbral engrams. So you better do it first instead of collecting those.

i would not call that fix, imbeciles who not lower light below 750 still can join your forge and afk.
it worked for years, until now its free and plenty of brainless imbeciles in this game who destroy experience for others. well "if you dont know how to use something, dont use it" but millenials are so entitled

about imbecils is totally agreeable. Some people can't lower the light so they decide to ruin the game for others. They have no curiosity to find a way without lowering the light. Heard that you can afk forge, don't care about others so they ruin. The same reason is for cheating. Instead of trying to understand, people go for cheats. The problem is human unfortunately or fortunately.
