Destiny 2
Full GPU usage despite minimum settings, please help
Okay so, after realizing i only have a couple days to level up my season pass i tried to log onto destiny 2 and grind out some bounties, only to realize that I'm getting a solid 24 FPS at the TOWER of all places. At first i thought it was a network issue due to the number of players at the tower but I tried a crucible match, with no more than 30 fps. I have a GTX 980 with a ryzen 7 1700x, and the latest version of my drivers. I used Geforce experience to test "optimal" settings, (the one nvidia recommends for my specific rig) and then i tried minimum settings (as low as the bar would go for changeable settings within Geforce experience), both of which only net me less than 40 fps when YESTERDAY i was seeing my average (and frame-locked) number of 66. I've restarted my pc, I've re-seated my graphics card, and my temps do not go above 45C.

You need to look at cpu usage per core. go into performance tab in task manager. On the cpu graph right click it, change graph to = logical processors (you can also log cpu usage in afterburner). I'm guessing you have a bottleneck somewhere. Also, never use nvidia optimal settings. Set in game settings on your own. In my experience, nvidia optimal settings never once gave me "optimal settings".
btw how much ram do you have? If it is less than 16 GB you will have issues.
If you see a single cpu core at 100% while in game, you have a cpu bottleneck. Which would limit your gpu usage. If your cpu is fine and your gpu is at 100%, you have a gpu bottleneck.

Also make dang sure your render resolution in video settings is at 100%. Setting it above that will tax your gpu quite a bit.
You WANT full GPU usage. It means your getting the most from your graphics card. Thats a good thing. Its things like your CPU that you dont want max usage on.

I had issues with msi afterburner, it went in conflict with my radeon settings. it might be the case with your nvidia settings, try to stop using it for a while(actually close the task) and see if there is a difference

(also why are you underclocking your 980 I don't understand)

100% GPU usage does not mean a GPU bottleneck. 100% GPU usage is normal and optimal.

Never take advise from someone that even uses the term bottleneck for computing. They usually are ill informed. Little Nikki you're fine and have nothing to worry about. Based on your photo its all working as it should.

I have a ryzen 7 1700x, my cpu is absolutely fine for something like Destiny 2 which is largely a GPU-based game. I've never had any bottlenecks with my CPU and im not having one now. I have 16gb of ddr4 ram, and my cpu is almost never the bottleneck because its an 8 core 16 thread processor designed for heavy workloads, if I can play, stream, and record devil may cry 5 at 720p/30fps while playing it at 1080p/60fps I should not have any problems whatsoever playing Destiny 2 at 1080p/60. Render % is also 100, i checked.

I feel like this is a joke right? You WANT full GPU usage. It means your getting the most from your graphics card. Thats a good thing. Its things like your cpu that you dont want max usage on.

My gpu shouldnt be working that hard to play destiny 2 when my gpu sees less usage when playing, broadcasting, and recording gameplay of devil may cry 5. The issue isnt that its being used, the issue is that my performance is lacking for how much of it is being used.

I'm using an evga sc edition gtx 980 which is prone to display driver restarts due to the fact that it was factory overclocked so i underclocked it to factory speeds for stability.

I understand you're having performance issue but it has NOTHING to do with your GPU running at 100% If your GPU was running less than 100% while in a game then you would have a problem.

I've had 8 gigs since 2012, haven't had any problems with any game.
can you underclock in driver directly? idk nvidia
is it the only game tho

I havent really run into a game that uses all of my gpu while im not encoding/recording/broadcasting anything. I've rolled back the driver because I've read that a lot of people are having problems with 441.41, so we'll try it now that im on 441.12 and I'll report back with findings.
Lucky me, it was the driver. Between barely managing 20fps on lowest settings to getting 66 fps stable on highest settings with 441.12, i can clearly say that this is a driver issue. Please be careful when updating your drivers!
