Humour in Destiny and how it can be misunderstood easily.

I have this friend that (finally) decided to give Destiny a try and has succesfully been sucked into the game. And yesterday we were on discord discussing what he likes and dislikes about the gameplay and story so far. Nothing I didn't expect outside of him thinking that shoulder charge is a balanced abi- Okay I'm not even going to go there, I don't want the PTSD to show itself again. But okay what really surprised me is that he said the jokes and/or humour in general are not good at all. So after I got rid of the body and was sure the FBI wouldn't find me. I started thinking what his motivation was to even mention that. The rest of this post is what I think about the humour in Destiny and how people could easily miss the way Destiny handles jokes in general.

First of all, if you buy a game like Destiny 2 and have high or even average expectations of humour. You're probably pretty new to the genre. Not that you should expect every game to just be a lifeless and shallow run & shoot. But that's not even close to being a high priority for a studio like bungie.

Second of all, I think Bungie put a lot of lines in there that i think are actually pretty funny and have sometimes even made me exhale more air out of my nose than usual (that's a good thing for someone like me). They just don't make it that easy to find, if they would do that, and push that joke to all the players it wouldn't be as good of a joke. If you're still clueless of what i'm talking about, let me give you an example of one I found quite funny.

The exotic pulse rifle graviton lance, good gun, I like it. And a couple of days ago i was waiting to load into the tower so i just opened the lore tab for it..

“So wait, that thing you found does… what?”
“It fires black holes.”
“No it doesn't.”
“Oh yeah. It does. Actual, tiny, bullet-sized black holes.”
“Did you tell the others?”
“Only that I found some weird gun in some overgrown tunnel back on Old Chicago. And that my Ghost was all, “THIS is why we were led here...'”
“Yours talks that way too?”
“What do you think?”
“OK, OK, but the gun—are you going to tell them?”
"Yeah, definitely."
"When?"
"Crucible."
"Oh no."
"Oh, yes."

Just the thought of 2 guardians having that conversation makes me smile. Surely it's not a Seinfeld classic, I would never expect that from any game unless it's being written developed and published by Amy Shumer. All jokes aside, i appreciate this kind of subtle humour, the fact that you don't see them coming makes it (for me at least) a much better joke already.

Humour is relative to your mood, destiny doesn't deliver the jokes at a good time either.
I've laughed at CL4P-TR4P more times than I have with the nolanbot.

Dinklebot is another story though, laughing at something doesn't count.

You Vatti copies should learn that humour should be present in normal dialogs and story. (If its suppose to exist). Lore is optional addon. Not main dish. 95% of people never even bothered to read one line from any of the guns.

I hate playing missions involving failsafe, as they try too hard to be random because random is funny (just like cayde sometimes)

Bad Company 1 and Bad Company 2 had some great lines. And rumor has it, next project by dice might be Bad Company 3.

You're confusing character assassination for the sake of humor with actual jokes.

I'm pretty sure your friend was talking about the ♥♥♥♥ dialogue, not some of the (genuinely decent) flavor text which is appropriately self-aware.

That's what i'm saying :) He's right about the game not being that funny on the surface, sometimes it's things you randomly notice or in some cases have to look deeper into the lore for.

We could argue entire night, but just like this game campaign.. its not worth the time. Wich is why Bungo decided to make it optional.
