So if it's not showing up for your inventory, then the game doesn't think you have it, and you should be able to find it for your account.
Plus side about catalysts is that as soon as it's applied your weapon will immediately be capable of producing light orbs and it matters. Catalysts are per account not per character, so if you've several copies of an exotic and obtain the catalyst for it all copies of the weapon can have the catalyst activated simultaneously -you only need the catalyst to drop once. The only catch is that each copy of a weapon with a catalyst applied must be "master-work" leveled individually.
It doesn't matter if the catalyst sux or not, use it.
I generally like having a separate copy of awesome, exotic weapons for each character without the need to perform an exchange through the vault.
