But honestly you will get much better weapons and armor from just playing activities and getting powerful rewards. There are some exceptions though.
To an NPC called Xur (something I wish the game told me but found out much later)
He spawns in a random location every friday, so will need to google where he's at.
outside of that - as mentioned above you can exchange planetary/quest resources also to up rep with nearly all npcs for better gear. Each main npc typically also have a weekly bounty/activity completion task for gear also.
Everything in between will get you higher light level stuff, its always progressing no matter what you do, just play however you see fit/enjoy.
The Xur on friday's is maybe the most important.
