Destiny 2

Rx 480 Optimization
Okay I don't claim to be an expert on PCs, but I am somewhat knowledgeable. I used to play Destiny 2 with a GTX 1050 Ti 4GB and all of the graphical settings except for textures were set to medium. Textures were set to highest. I play on a 900p 60 Hertz monitor and with the 1050 Ti I was getting a very solid 60 FPS except during heavy fights it would drop to low 50s high 40s.

The other day I upgraded to an Rx 480 4GB and I noticed that I took a dip in performance. At first I thought it was because I changed the video settings to high, but even when I put the settings back to the old 1050 Ti graphic settings it still didn't help. Now most of the time my FPS is in the low to mid 50s with the Rx 480. Sometimes it goes to the high 40s for a bit. It's only at 60 FPS in menus or loading screens. I know from a raw horsepower perspective, the Rx 480 has about 30-40% more graphical power.

I unplugged my PC and double checked all of my wires and connections and nothing was loose or unplugged. I also ran a suite of benchmark programs such as the GPU-Z GPU stress test, 3D Mark and Heaven Benchmark 4.0. Comparing my scores to the 1050 Ti, the new Rx 480 consistently gets 35-40% higher score in these benchmarks/stress tests. I would also like to point out that both my 1050 Ti and Rx 480 are stock. None are overclocked and no voltages or power limits have been altered.

I understand that some games are more optimized for Nvidia or some are more optimized for AMD, but looking up benchmarks for Destiny 2, I should be getting a rock solid 60 FPS on high settings with my Rx 480. Has anyone else been receiving inconsistent performance with an Rx 480? By the way all of my GPU drivers and Windows 10 itself has all of the newest updates. When gaming the Rx 480 is in the 50s to low 60s Celcius.

My PC specs as of today:

CPU: I5 2400 @ 3.1 GHz

RAM: 16GB 1333 MHz in dual channel

GPU: Power Color Red Dragon Rx 480 4GB

Storage: 500GB PNY SSD; 500 GB WD HDD; 500 GB Seagate HDD

Power Supply: 600 Watt EVGA 80 Plus Bronze (Purchased new 2 years ago)

Motherboard: OEM Acer Veriton for LGA 1155 Sandy Bridge

The only thing from a pre-built is the motherboard and processor. All of the other parts have been purchased separately from PC stores. Do I need to undervolt or change some settings in Wattman or in AMD Radeon Settings? Right now the 480 is stock. The only things I changed in AMD Radeon Settings were setting the video profile to Vivid, the Texture Filtering Quality to Performance, and Radeon Image Sharpening is on. Thank you for reading my lengthy post. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Update: I used Wattman to increase the Power Limit to +30% and this fixed my issues. Now my Rx 480 is stable and it's performing about 35% better than my 1050 Ti was.

Sounds like Radeon Chill is enabled. If your GPU was being pushed as hard as it should be, it wouldn't be sitting below 60ºc

What does performance utilization look like while in game? You can use HWinfo and set up a few graphs applicable to the relevant statistics and see this. Tab out after a short while and check them out.

ur cpu is kindove trash ngl... dont expect a 8 year old cpu to run modern games well

I have a Rx480 with 2GB and it actually runs fine, I run medium/1080p and it can handle 60 fps the majority of the time. When it does go down it is usually because of CPU too.

Bungie has i5-2400 in recomanded system settings.
Fair developer doesnt states PC components as ecommanded if they are insufficient to hold 60 fps at at least 99% of times.

The CPU and GPU can both manage 60fps - the inherent performance of the hardware is not at fault here. The actual performance is what is lacking, so OP needs to provide some data about the utilization of either, in order to see what's going on.

Also OP went from a Nvidia gpu to an AMD gpu.

Did you run DDU? If not then your computer could have lingering Nvidia driver files making it confused.

Eeh I dunno if 1050ti is better, its more like a lateral move. Almost no gain or loss.

1050ti is worse by a pretty large margin.

I checked my Radeon settings and Radeon Chill is off. I have always used Afterburner for statistics but it doesn't work in this game. Is HWinfo with Windows 10 or is it a download?

And for the people stating it's my CPU, it would make no sense for there to be a more consistent and higher framerate with a GPU that is 30-40% weaker. With the 1050 Ti it was higher and more consistent. The Rx 480 sits inbetween the GTX 1060 3GB and GTX 1060 6GB.

No I didn't use DDU. I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers using Windows 10. There are no Nvidia processes running in Task Manager.

Radeons kinda has iffy driver, using 470 rn after updating to latest driver im successfully crashed on D2 2 times in a row. Then the next day theres smaller driver update and it fix those. Try checking for new updates.

Yeah I just switched to the Red Team the other day. I updated my drivers yesterday, but I can check again for today to see if there are hotfixes.

Oh wow that sucks. I'm lucky I'm not getting crashes.
