Vault full. How to identify what armor and weapons to dismantle.
Even though there are many guides on great builds, there is virtually no information at all about what is worthless and safe to recycle for materials.

And of course your vault will only hold 500 items, which easily makes it one of the big problems for new players, as you don't want to shard a perfect roll weapon or armor piece that you do not have the knowledge to recognize yet.

It would be great to have some simple rules or even some guides, but I have not found any. Here I summarize what I know, and ask for others to contribute for what I don't know.

EARLY GAME
- At the beginning you have no space issues. Just use the Destiny Item Manager (DIM) web page or app to max equip the best gear you have and store the rest in the Vault. You can do this until you have about 300 items in the vault.

MID GAME
- You can safely dismantle all weapons and armor below blue.
- You can safely dismantle any blue armor with stats below +55 unless it was selected by DIM as your best piece. Which is virtually all of it. I don't remember seeing a single blue over +55.
- You can safely dismantle all blue weapons with light level 0-5 below your current (or all below 950 if you already reached it). Initially you might use some of those as you might be looking for something specific that you don't have yet.
The above should carry you to 950+ even if you keep every legendary and exotic.

MID-LATE GAME
- You definitely want to keep your exotics and masterworked weapons.
- This is where things get tricky. Your knowledge of what are good and bad perks is limited. And your collection of legendaries is creeping towards 500, the Vault limit.
- You are aware that there are "God Rolls" and even "good rolls" perk combinations that are rare and you want to be sure to not dismantle. But you don't know what they are. You might have them in your vault and fear loosing them to ignorance.
- You have many duplicate legendaries but they all have different perk combinations.
- You are playing PvE and PvP and know you will eventually have all 3 characters, and that "ideal sets" depend on both character and game mode, so you need to keep various sets.

... and this is where my knowledge fails me. I have no idea which legendary perk combinations are good to keep and which are safe to dismantle. Any advice would be greatly welcomed.

ADVICE FROM THIS THREAD:
(of course, nothing replaces learning about each perk and how they can interact)

0) Good sources of Perk information:
- DIM (Destiny Item Manager).
- Light.gg.

1a) Keep Blues at highest current light level (950+) as infusion materials.
1b) Of course also keep Pinnacle weapons.

2) Short term quick-fix (for legendaries after the above advice):
- Auto, Pulse, SMG, MG, Hand cannon:
--- Keep perks: Feeding Frenzy, Outlaw.
--- Keep perks: KillClip, Rampage, MultikillClip, Headseeker.
- Bow:
--- Keep perks: Rampage + Explosive Head / Timed Payload.
- Shotguns + other heavies: TBD.
- Shard the rest.

3) Generally good perks:
- Those that increase damage, like Rampage.
- Those that improve the magazine.
- Those that improve reload.
- Those that improve accuracy.

4) PvE good perks:
- Generally reload + damage.
- Feeding Frenzy, Outlaw, Rapid Hit.
- Rampage, Swashbuckler, KillClip, MultikillClip.

5) PvP good perks:
- Generally reload + damage.
- Or things like RangeFinder, Quickdraw, Snapshot Sights.

6) Best weapons (usually exotics and pre-made mastercrafts):
(not really about what to shard, but useful to know what to hunt for)
- Ace of Spades
- Recluse
- Izanagi
- Leviathan (for nightfall unstoppables)
- Divinity
- 21%
Power weapons:
- Darcy
- BlackTalon
- Two-tailed Fox
- Braytech launcher

Weapons: Keep anything you use, especially weapons that can't be reclaimed from collections. Also keep at least one example of each weapon type for bounties and black armoury frame.

Armour: Keep stuff you like that has stats where you want it.

[EDIT] I should also add that you will want to keep max level blue gear for infusion. Purple gear is worth more as legendary shards than it is for infusion.

I dismatle weapons I can get from the collection or I know I wont use anyway. Worst case I just have to grind for a weapon roll at some point if I really want it.

I know I know... "keep what you need/want, get rid of what you don't need". Sigh.

The whole point is that most of us newer players have no idea what that is.

For weapons: You'll want to hang on to a few that have good combinations of perks.
Perks that increase damage like rampage, Or improved magazine size or faster reload. Improving acuracy is good as well.
For example, if you get a submachine gun with rampage, flared magazine well and dynamic sway reduction, hang on to it, even if you don't use an SMG right now...

Right now, I'd advice you to try out all kinds of weapons you find. This way you can figure out for yourself what perks work best for you, then hang on to weapons that have that combination of perks.

Look at the perks. Are they good?

If yes, keep it.
If no, shard it.

For PVE you generally want a reload perk and damage perk. Feeding frenzy, outlaw or rapid hit paired with rampage, swashbuckler, kill clip or multikill clip.

For PVP things are a bit more complex. You might want a reload perk and a damage perk, or you might choose things like rangefinder, quickdraw or snapshot sights. Reload perks and damage perks are nice while they're active, but neutral-game perks will benefit you a lot more often.

Once you have some good weapons and you're a bit more comfortable with which barrel options etc. are good you can start to worry about the other perks.

If you actually took the time to understand the game instead of staring and guides telling you everything, you would instantly see what guns are good. I swear, this internet-assisted hand-holding is killing games.

Well, another way to identify them is as I do: I usually grab 2 or 3 of the same weapon, like 3 pulse rifles or smg which I think have good perks, but still can't decide.

Then run some strikes / vex offensives / haunted forests (= more or less brainless activities with lots of ads) and start testing each weapon by myself.

That's how I usually needle out the things, usually being able to discard one out of the 3 weapons.

That's a slow process so I only do it from time to time and when I really cant decide what to shard.

Also as they said, any weapon I dont use, which doesnt have random perks, is sharded, as I can print it again from collections, if needed.

Also something I do is accumulate more than one copy of some legendary weapons, even if im not very interested on them, and just keep the one I feel has best perks

DestinyItemManager will let you see the actual stat values for perks by the way. It will tell you that hammer-forged rifling adds +10 range, for example. That can help you make a more informed decision about which version of a weapon is better when comparing. You may have two perks that “increase range” for example, but not know which is better.

The reason that there's no guide is because what traits constitute a good roll is entirely subjective. Then there's the fact that each weapon and weapon archetype would have different ideal rolls: a precision-frame Service Revolver used for PvE would be treated very differently than a high-impact Duke MK.44 you bring into Crucible.

It comes down to learning what every perk does, and applying your own experience with similar weapons to make a decision.

Light.gg is a good resource for both learning about traits and seeing which traits are available for tge gun in question.

Yes because looking at the right-hand side of the screen where the stats are is too hard. Need 3rd party software for that.

The in-game bars aren't accurate... But thanks for your sarcastic, ill-informed response.

They are accurate enough for the purposes of the game. You're not gonna stand still when actually playing the game, so an inaccuracy of 1 pixel won't matter at all.

Who decides what is and is not "accurate enough for the purposes of the game"? When selecting perks, if one gives +5 to a stat and another gives +10, I'd rather take the +10.
