How do i get gear with higher power level?

So i only get gear with around 750 power level and I know you can get 960 power level gear but how do i get this stuff? Does it just drop better and better gear overtime or is there something i have to do?

It will drop better and better gear over time.

Yes just play the game and you will get better items. But dont forget there is max light level that you have and medium light level. This means- for example you need to have all 800 level items to get 801 from drops. If you have 800 light but your items are mix between 800 and 790 then you will get only 800+ items from drops.

So just grind)

well you wont get 960 gear as soon as you start playing......, it takes times and only possible to go from 950-960 if you get pinnacle gear

From 750 to 900 you will get higher powered gear by doing absolutely anything. I'd recommend going to speak to Amanda Holliday in the hanger at the tower. She will give you access to the story missions.

Once you hit the 900 power soft cap, you can only increase your power level by completing challenges that reward "powerful gear". You won't start seeing those until you get to 900, so worry about that later.

Once you hit 950, you can only increase your power level by completing challenges that reward "pinnacle gear".

Once you get to 960, your gear is maxed out. Although you can continue to increase your power level via the seasonal artifact.

Make sure you don't have any common (white) gear equipped. That may lock your drops at 750.
Depending which DLCs you own, you'd play through them to get upgrades.
Once you hit 900 PL, the powerful and pinnacle activities unlock for you. These will be +1 to +5-ish depending on which tier (1-3) or if it's a pinnacle drop.

Gear drops are based on your average POSSIBLE gear level, you don't need to equip better gear, just have it in your inventory or bank. This is why leveling another char is so much faster, cause you have the possible level boost from guns.

Just play the game, you'll get there, there's very little content that requires high gear anyways. Raids and Nightfalls and certain strikes for exotics.

You might want to Google and use the Destiny Item Manager. Especially the feature that lets it pick the highest gear you own (from inventory or vault), at least until you reach 950.

You don’t need to equip your highest power gear. As long as it exists (even in your inventory, vault or on another character) it will affect the power level of your drops.

True, but weapons from one character affect the power level of drops on another character. That’s the point that I was making.

So i tried the destiny item manager but cannot seem to understand the loadout optimizer? Do i just equip the one at the top and that is the "best" gear that i can possibly use at this current moment?

Or maybe you should learn how the game works instead? Plenty of guides on YouTube.

Well either my game is bugged, or that's not true anymore. I'm nearly at 950 LL and I have been receiving gradually higher items from all sources ever since I've hit the 900 "cap". Nothing has changed, compared to what was happening pre-900.

Nope. Your world drops drop at 0-3 levels below your current max power. You might get drops that are higher than your current highest in that slot, but you won't get anything above your overall power level from random drops.
