What is temper? How do I use an obsidian radiance?

I tend to Google stuff before I ask here because though Destiny has 3 years worth of questions the old interweb pipes usually has some very detailed articles but I can't find anything explaining what temper is, just that it is forge related and I can max it. I ask because I had an Obsidian Radiance temper effect and had no idea what to do with it so fed it to my dog.

Supposedly it was a mod for a forged weapon or something. So where do I see my temper? I must have done 100 forges by now and not once have I encountered temper...

The purple data lattice things, correct? You get them from forges, and Ada can turn them into an upgrade you can apply to Forge weapons to do more damage to enemies in forge ignitions.

Temper seems to be a buff that related to the mysterious box quest for forge keys. Example- There should be two Black Armory drones flying around. Shoot them both down and you’ll get a buff called Maximum Temper.

Defeat the Boss and reignite the Volundr Forge. A large Black Armory chest will spawn close to the Forge. Open it and you’ll receive the Fishhook key. Inspect the item and hold down the action key to insert it into the box

'Maximum Temper' is what you see during a forge ignition when two little floating drones are destroyed. It allows players to get a key from a box at the end, part of the Izanagi's Burden quest. I don't believe it does anything else.

The Radiance's only practical effect is the ignition damage increase, but it also adds a snazzy purple glow to the weapon.

That temper is related to the box quest, however the special slot on Black Armory weapons is also called a temper slot and the radiances are applied to that to give the effect I mentioned earlier.
