MIGRATE YOUR ACCOUNT TO STEAM
When Destiny 2: Shadowkeep launches, Destiny 2 PC will move to the Steam platform. Existing Destiny 2 PC players will be able to migrate their Guardians, gear, game progress, Silver, and previous purchases from Battle.net to Steam at no cost.
We are committed to making this transition as simple and seamless as possible for our existing PC community. For more information, as well as future information and updates, please visit https://bungie.net/pcmove
On October 1st, when Destiny 2 is available on Steam(as well as the new Expansion Shadowkeep), a new program called "New Light" launches.
New Light is just a fancy name of the free Destiny 2 content that is available for ANY player on ANY platform to play the game completely free.
This "New Light" content contains:
All of Destiny 2 Base Game
All of Destiny 2 DLC#1 Curse of Osiris
All of Destiny 2 DLC#2 Warmind
Gambit a new unique competitive PvE activity that originally launched as a part of Forsaken
All Destiny 2 Strikes(Including Forsaken and Shadowkeep Strikes)
All Destiny 2 PvP Maps(Including Maps that launched with Forsaken and Shadowkeep)
Free Roam of ALL Destiny 2 Destinations("Planets")(Including Forsaken's Tangled Shore, and Dreaming City, and Shadowkeeps updated Moon)
Certain Exotics and activities, as well as some additional gear and loot.
All of that content listed above is completely and permanently free for any player to download any time after Destiny 2 launches on steam. That new light content is free on xbox and playstation as well.
So regardless, you dont have to spend a dime.
You do however have to make a decision if you played Destiny 2 on Battle.net
If you want to keep any gear or characters you earned and made, you need to sign up for the PC migration, so it will be copied to your steam account.
If you never played Destiny 2 on Battle.net, only played a little, or dont care, then dont worry about the migration, since it will be easier just to start fresh on Steam.
For anyone else reading, who is attached to their gear, and/or bought Forsaken, you need to do the PC move in order to transfer your gear, DLC ownership, and any silver bought to Steam. It may be possible to do after Oct 1, but I would not count on it(better safe than sorry)
To sign up for the PC transfer, go to this link
https://www.bungie.net/7/en/PCMove
Click "Get Started"
Select Battle.net
Sign in with your battle.net information.
Verify your email is correct, and select to receive system notifications, Click continue.
Verify the Characters, DLC ownership, and Silver is correct, Click continue.
Read the terms carefully. Click I agree
Click on Steam account, Read warning carefully.
Click continue.
Sign in using your steam account information. MAKE CERTAIN it is the steam account you want to transfer the D2 content too.
Check the Content (characters DLC ownership, silver) is correct, and hit "Im done"
And thats it. On Oct 1st when Destiny 2 is Live on PC, everything from Battle.net will have transferred over like nothing to your steam account.
Anyways if you or someone else has any further questions, I would be happy to help.
apart from existing ingame progress not being on steam then?
Also where will the new light program appear?
Linking just transfers anything from battle.net to steam. If you dont have anything you want to transfer, then it makes no difference.
If you play on Steam without linking, you will start a brand new account basically(which again doesnt matter if you dont care about the Battle.net account)
Linking is just important for people who already have put time into Destiny 2, and/or have made DLC purchases beyond the content New Light contains.
It isnt really a program, just a name for the upcoming free offerings of Destiny 2. It is like if Bethesda released Skyrim for free, but kept the DLC as optional paid additions
As for where it will appear, I cannot be certain as this is just speculation, but I would assume near the end of September, that you will either see "Destiny 2" or "Destiny 2: New Light" appear in the steam store like all other Free to Play games, and click "Play Game" or "Pre-Install" to download and install it just like any other free game. It definitely will appear on or before 10 am PST October 1st.
In general the transferring mostly matters for those who bought stuff in Destiny, or played the game.
As you did neither, there isnt really much point.
You will be able to keep playing on battle.net until some point before steam launch October 1st(where the launcher will be disabled).
You have NOT actually transferred your account. You registered your account to automatically and seamlessly transfer October 1st. So any progress gear loot or changes you make in the game until Battle.net shuts down, will be transferred over. So you are free to keep playing.
Anyone else reading this DO NOT WAIT UNTIL LAST MINUTE to register for the the transfer. If you do, it is possible you may not transfer at all(Bungie has not made any announcements as to whether any transfers will be possible after the one time transfer that will automatically happen for ALL players October 1st)
As far as installing the game on steam goes, we are still in the dark, as are consoles about whether preloading the game will happen or not. In the past, for every single of their big releases from Destiny 1 launch, to Forsaken, even including Betas, were available for preload(typically 1 week before the launch) So odds are, September 24th Destiny 2 will popup in the store on Steam and be available for preload and install, but unable to launch on Steam until October 1st.
