You think it's the exact same engine D2 is using? You're wrong. The bulk of the rendering code was re-written entirely. Whole systems, like particle and animation sub systems, where entirely redone or heavily revamped. All of the systems were touched on for D2. The armor was reworked, weapon systems were changed, and on and on.
It's not simply a matter of exporting the art to D2 and VOILA! Instant D1 on PC. It's far, FAR more complicated than that.
Thats like saying Fifa shouldnt ever run on the Dice Engine, yet it does....
Or Rocket League shouldnt run on Unreal Engine for instance, yet it does.
And those are extremely different genres where the game engine is made for FPS mainly.
It is simply a matter of recompiling for devs.
This is one of those cases where there's a lot amount of information available on the internet, which you read, and formed an opinion around. But you have zero game development experience, therefore you have no actual knowledge on the matter. Simply saying a thing does not make it so. I have over sixteen years of development experience, and worked on many AAA titles - I can tell you, from EXPERIENCE, you are incorrect.
There are absolutely parts of the D2 engine that are from D1. I never said there wasn't. But by and large, massive chunks of the code were heavily re-worked, or re-written from scratch. Why? Because hardware changed. D1 was built on a foundation of knowledge from Bungie working on Halo, which is a much smaller, less detailed game. D1 pushed that knowledge to the limits, and they did a great job in maxing out the power of the Xbox 360 and PS3. But the Xbox One and PS4 had different architecture, different capabilities, thus the engine had to change in order to take advantage of those differences.
This happens even with the engines you mentioned. Unreal Engine first started with Unreal Tournament. Then UE2 launched with Americas Army, back in 2002. Then 3 years later, Unreal 3 came out, which was the gold standard for years, until it was redone yet again in 2012 as UE4. You cannot take ANYTHING from any of those old versions of Unreal Engine, and simply drop it into UE4, and have it work. Same goes with Frostbite. Or Snowdrop. Or Unity. Each major iteration of an engine, changes core functionality of all sub systems, and that requires a ton of additional work, if you want to bring old content forward.
Just imagine, you start, you fake Crota and all of them and so on, then after the D1 content, you do Red War, it makes sense to me for Bungie to do that.
They would have to redo the story to a point where its more like a Destiny 2 story, whre its actually understandable, the first game, to me was so....detatched...i got lost in the story to where i forgot what i was doing.
Like I said, I'd love D1 on PC.
But even with the starter mission, it's not the same. All of the textures and materials have changed. All of the vertex blends have changed. New objects were created and placed into the scene. New lighting, new LOD's, the whole city wall looks different. The entire background vista was changed. It's a huge amount of rework for one small level.
In this case, it was an intro mission for New Light, so it was a needed update to bring new players into the universe. But it would be immensely resource heavy for Bungie to try to basically redo all of D1, in the updated D2 engine.

Uhhh, I was part of the TO Mod team for UT99...
I was part of TO Mod team for UT2004.
We made total conversions.
You're talking about unreal engine x vs Unreal engine y.
Destiny 1 and 2 are effectively ran on the same game engine.
Also, it was very much possible to easely port UT99 maps to 2004.
It was also very very easy to just port Unreal gold maps to UT99 (Unreal engine 1 vs 1.5).
The original was unique at the time in some respects but the campaign itself only became interesting during the final two missions before its abrupt end. I don't think it would be a viable move and people aren't really missing too much who didn't get to experience it.
