Take this as an example:
My warlock was about halfway through Forsaken. Upon D2 coming to steam, my story progress was reset. This means I need to start from the first mission (Last Call) on that character again to get the story progress. Any loot I picked up when I was halfway through the campaign is still there. Just simply the progress in the individual story missions themselves is reset.
I hope I explained this well.
The "Legacy" campaigns (Red War, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind) are considered things of the past and are completely optional. Think of it as hopping into the game in year 2. Most year 1 stuff is sorta obsolete now anyway.
I know it sounds like a poorly planned out idea, and I agree, but in the long term it makes some sense. This way means that new players don't have to grind for a while before they can access most of the game's content. They all have the same baseline as someone who had been around for both year 1 and year 2.
Sure, most stuff from Forsaken and now Shadowkeep is still locked unless they buy the respective expansions, but newer players aren't thrown in with this feeling of being way behind everyone else.
