There isn't really much of a story to begin with.
Trying to put myself in the shoes of a new player starting from nothing...forget it. They have added so much to grind for and to chase you are better off not even wasting your time.
there's plenty of story content, i've played through them several times, but from what I gather, new light has completely gutted the linear new player experience that was there before.
i.e. you'd start with the tower being bombed by the red legion and you'd lose your light, having to fight to get it back before you can even have a super ability. You'd be gradually introduced to the characters and different abilities, but now they just throw you in the deep end with the endgame areas.
Edit: I screwed up the quote formatting somehow, so I fixed it.
But if they start you on the tower I can totally understand it being confusing!
Yeah, you literally get like a 5 minute intro now and are thrown straight in the tower. From what I can tell there's tons of stuff thrown at you can do, but most of it is turbo easy, has worse rewards than what you start with, and no easily discernible way to tell what is worth doing and what isn't. It's a huge cluster.
As far as I know, getting to 950 is impossible without the DLC, as it it's only achievable with loot provided from it. That might have changed with this latest Steam release and update but I doubt it.
Then you get a quest to go to EDZ and do a few of each activities as well as a cut down story line there.
Then the other destinations unlock in turn based on EXP gains and each have a similar pair of quests with the set of activites completed and cut down story missions.
Also have the old Leviathan raid invite as well as the start of all the other content's quest lines in my logs, plus separate intro quests for crucible, gambit, strikes etc.
This is without unlocking the old story or starting the moon yet too...
You can play the campaign by visiting Amanda Holliday.
It's been made optional with the new version of the game because lots of players want to skip it to play with their friends who've played it already. But if you want to play the story, go see Amanda Holliday.
As far as I know, they've changed that with this DLC.
It is pretty inexcusable honestly and will undoubtedly scare off many new players.
At least they're F2P so they're out nothing when they move on.
